The 2011 Calgary Gunshow Report!

Thanks for the review guys!

If it makes you guys feel any better, the gun shows I've gone to this year near Ottawa have all been terrible also :(

Didn't anyone wear the "Monkey Thrill Cam" on their head this year and go up and down the rows to show what was there on the tables! lol

I am quite sure he has a bunch 'o' "Dragon Action Figures" dressed up like Nazi's and Doughboys etc...

What about Lugers, Snipers, Dewats, 1911, P38, Enfields, Nagants, Mausers, Johnson Rifles, PP and PPK, Garands.....Did I miss any! :D

How much for parking, food, etc?

13 bucks to park, on the grounds, 10 bucks to get in the door. Learned long ago, not to go to the concession.:D Red Deer, next week will be a pleasant relief. Some dewats. 400. Suomi one end of the hall and 800. for the same, at the other.

Park on the street a block away for free as it is a holiday....

As usual I accept the higher than normal prices and try to barter with vendors.
I made a few offers on knives, patches and other small stuff. I was turned down in all my attempts and bought ammo on sale from TSE instead...

...I only went for the fridge magnet anyhow....

Offered one gent $3000 for a Vopo marked refurb G43, he declined and demanded no less than the $3300 price tag. Well his loss since that will most likely be sitting and showing up at more gun shows and merchandise sitting is revenue lost. Spent the $3000 on a SAN Black Target Special instead.

What does "Vopo marked refurb" mean? I've been looking on and off for a G43 for a while now and to be honest I really don't know much in the way of terms for these guns. Just trying to learn what I can.:)

Vopo = Volkspolizei (Peoples Police) of the former DDR (East Germany).

Many G43's were refurbished by the East Germans and Russians post WW2. The East Germans issued them to the Volkspolizei, Grenzschutztruppen, and the NVA (Nationale Volksarmee - National Peoples Army).

Most, if not all of these refurbs will have an East German refurb stamp on them to denote use by the Vopos, etc... Many will have had parts replaced, been force matched, new stocks, reblued, shellac-ed, new handguards, etc... They are very collectible in their own right as Cold War items, and WW2 rifles. MANY G43's in Canada are East German Vopo refurbs, and they don't command the same prices as an original untouched example, but they still are NOT cheap. ;)

Happy hunting!

Thanks Desert Fox, I'm glad I asked. Oh and thanks for the pic too!

I'll be totaly honest and admit that I know very little about the G43 (or most collectable WW2 German arms for that matter). I've wanted a G43 for a while now mostly for it's historical value and not as a shooter so I should probably stay away from the Vopo marked ones. I have tons of questions on them but I'll start another thread for that. Thanks again!:)
