The 25-06 Remington

I have shot black bear in the 300lb range and whitetail and wolves and coyotes and smaller pests all with my 2506. I absolutely love the cartridge.
2506 and 458wm basically cover any hunting i want to do

I wanted to follow up on this more as my daughters wanted to go hunting so I was short before.

Since you compare the 6.5 PRC and 25-06 let’s look at them with similar bullets. I haven’t loaded any of these yet so am relying on online published data.

The 25-06 with 131 black jacket ACE bullets is doing 3200+ FPS with a G7 BC of .330

The 6.5 PRC with 130 gr ELD-M bullets are at 3200+ FPS with a G7 BC of .279

So we get basically the same gr bullets doing almost the same speeds with close to the same BC’s is going to have virtually identical downrange performances. Twins, so to speak.

As companies come out with better and better bullets these smaller calibers are packing quite a punch.

They are very similar if you cherry pick the best target billet available for the 25-06 and hamstring the PRC with a mid range offering.

Yes, that was the point. The previous poster did the same thing but the other end of the spectrum. At least I compared apples to apples.

Many people forget that what cartridge fired a bullet only matters till the muzzle. At that point velocity is 100% what determines performance.

Quarter bores have been held back due to bullets for ever, somewhat like the 6.5’s decades ago when the 30’s ruled the roost. Now with new technology and bullets becoming available they a making a big impact, literally.

And like another poster said at sane hunting distances it doesn’t matter anyways.

I have been in love with the .25-06 for 15 years and find its great for everything I do. My first was a Ruger 77 with the semi bull barrel and I love it. Last fall I found a T3x in 25-06 as well and couldn’t leave it in the store so I brought it home to see if I can tell the difference between the two barrel lengths as I’ve read many times that the 24” will out shoot the 22 5/8” but I have yet to see it. Both rifles shooting the same load with 117gr interlocks out to 300 yards and both still incredible. The tikka is coming out next week to the mountains with hopes of finding a legal ram up in the mountains

Lol and the 6.5 PRC eats as much powder as some of the 7 mags. One can play this game all day long right up to the 50BMG. The 25-06 is an overbore so obviously not as efficient. Yet what it does, it does very well.

SCG.

I load from 53 to 59 grains of powder in a variety of PRC loads. 7mm Rem Mag is typically 60 to 70 grains

The 25-06 handload I made for 20 years for a friend uses 57grs H4831sc

You’re not going to shoot those 131 gr Black Jack in any factory .25-06 rifle.

Even though my sako 25-06 hasn't shot as accurately as I would like, I still believe the 25-06 is a good cartridge. All the 30-06 offspring are good imo. The 25-06 is marginal for elk and moose imo but it is near perfect for deer and antelope, you could throw wolves and coyotes in there as well. Nope, nothing wrong with a 25-06. BTW nice rifle Buckmastr!

I had a 25-06 in a Ruger Mark 2 varmint target. I lost interest in it while target shooting at 700 yards where my buddies 220 Swift was exponentially more accurate. Having said that, it was a beautiful rifle, and in hindsight I should have found a load it liked before it ended up being my first sale on the EE.

That’s not the point. Point is comparing apples to apples, the 25-06 uses the same amount of powder (roughly) as the 6.5 PRC and with same weight bullets has comparable (almost exact) ballistics. I was showing The person that commented that the 25-06 used the same amount of powder as the 6.5 PRC yet had down range ballistics of a .243 how wrong they were.

I think some people are somewhat ballistically challenged. As they don’t understand that two cases of similar design and capacity will produce similar results.

Enjoy

I get what you’re saying, but real apples to apples would be comparing the either run of the mill factory ammo in both, or the biggest baddest target bullets available in both as well.

Most 25-06 owners are shooting Hornady 117gr boat tail soft points or 115gr Nosler Partitions (BC .390). 1200 ft lbs energy @ 400y

Compare to a 6.5 PRC 143ELDx (most popular factory load or component bullet, BC .571, retains 1200 ft lbs energy to 710 yards

The 25-06 is a fine cartridge, given its limitations.

And a 7mm out performs the 6.5prc comparing ballistics. So what's the point? Every heavy for cal ELD outperforms the next smaller cal. Your line may be 6.5's, next guys may be 7's, or 30's, or 338's, or 416's, what exactly is your point?
