The 25-06 Remington

I am curious as to what factory ammo has got the most accuracy out of your rifles.

My 25-06 is a Forbes 24B at 5.75 pounds and a standard weight 24" barrel. Best accuracy is with Hornady Whitetail ammunition at 2990 fps and the 117 grain Boat Tail spire point. My son got his first caribou with this rig and it makes very nice exit holes on 300 pound caribou. It shoots into 0.8" MOA all the way out to 540 yards, (when the wind is low).
It doesnt have enough momentum to knock down the steel rams at 540 but it will take out the pigs at a quarter of a mile.

Shooting the 117 grain Hornady load is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES9zRM2g6ec

the 25-06 makes my list as a caribou cartridge. Look at 2:40 for the effect of the above bullet on game.

:)My best accuracy results with the .25-06 is with handloads using the Hornady 117gr V-MAX pushed by a top end load of IMR 4350. I'd post a scan/photo of a witnessed target shot at 185 yds but I haven't got back into posting photos since the  photo bucket 'screw up'.

I don’t have a 25-06 but I’ve got a .257 and it’s definitely a magic sweet spot. I’ve got 5 different factory loadings, they all shoot. I haven’t seen anything that won’t beat MOA. Leaning against a wood pile with the sling wrapped around my forearm and a sore shoulder 3 shot group 7/8ths” at 120yards. From pests to moose with little recoil or fuss, and like a damn laser beam. 2” high @ 100 and there’s zero concern or thought needed at hunting ranges. Just aim and shoot.

A nice picture of the 25/06 Rem.

About 30 years ago I bought a Ruger no.1 V from a guy in Burnaby, took it to the range on the way home and put a scope on it. Shot 5 of the guys 117 gr. Handloads into a 1/2”. Ever seen what an 87 gr. at 35-3600 does to a varmit?

I intended to build one over 20 years ago at the SAIT "Gunsmithing" course that was offered back in the day. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I was called away before I could do any serious mischief to the Gaillard barrel that I had bought for the project. I dropped the barrel (and a box of parts) off to #### Pietsch and left it at that. He barreled the action for me and I later sourced a take-off Browning wood stock and bedded the rifle to that. I then left it with the Old Man and he spent some time playing with it and working on loads. It's a shooter! All that being said, I don't think that I've ever fired a shot through it and certainly never taken it hunting. Maybe, one of these years, if my antelope draw hits in Alberta that will be the rifle that I take.

I had a 25-06 B78 Browning single shot yrs back that I used for fun shooting & on occasional pest critters that was a tight shooter. The only other 25's I had were
a Savage 99 in 250-3000 and a built up single shot on a Falling Block Works action in 256 Win mag. Only the 256 was the one I took deer with .

I had a 25-06 howa for a short period of time. It was a lovely low recoil round compared to what I usually shoot. If opportunity came knocking again I wouldn’t hesitate to pick one up.
