The 270win is the best cartridge to hunt with ever.

The 270 win shouldn't be compared to magnum cartridges, of coarse magnums are in a different league. Compared to all other non magnum cartridges there's not much out there that will shoot 130gr bullets at an easy 3100 fps and 110 ttsx at over 3400fps. The 280 rem is another great cartridge. BC's are fairly high for 130 - 150 gr bullets in both 277 and 284 cal. 280 having an advantage with heavier bullets. For hunting deer, I don't think there's much better.:)

The fact that this debate is happening about 2 cartridges that are 100 years old and still very viable rounds tells you just how good each of these really are and just how far we've actually come in cartridge development in the last 100 years.

The fact that people still want to debate this just shows that most hunters can't think their way out of a paper bag. :)

270 was my first rifle. Started reloading on it and I've been chasing that performance ever since. Yes there's better long range cartridges out there, but for 500 yards, this was the best I've ever dealt with. Ammos cheap too. Lol

The debate of the 270 verses 30/06 will go on for ever.

Even Jack O'connor had many other rifles as he knew the limitations of his beloved 270,,, Jack owned a variety of magnums and in his collection was a 30/06.

It's good that the new up and comers are thrilled too have a cartrage that suits their needs. Many of us here on CGN have owned those 270's and many still do.

Being proud of your cartrage and rifles makes it alot easier to be the Marksman you want to be as it gives you drive and determination too be better,,, much like Carlos Hathcock.

Mind you he used a 30/06 too get into the record books and held the longest confirmed take down for many years,, , even today he holds the world record of most confirmed dispatches to date.

He found a writing from Ernest Hemmingway that described part of his talents.

"Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men for long enough and like it, never really care for anything else thereafter. "

Carlos words follow.

"I like shooting, and love too hunt but I never did like killing anybody. It's my job. If I didn't get those" bass-words", then their going too kill alot of those kids dressed up like Marines. That's the way I look at it."

The USA sniper cor used 30/06's for sharp shooting in the Veitnam conflict.
Corls won the prestigious Wimbledon cup at camp Perry in long range shooting in 1965.

Some folks might call the 30/06 old school and out dated,,, funny thing is that it still sells in record numbers and always will.

Always glad to share on parts of history that the younger generation missed out on since this was long before their time.

Had to be said so there I said it! 10% more awesome than a 30-06 too.

So with all the post so far no one has told the rest of us why the 270 winchester is 10% better than the 30/06.

It would nice too know what this 10% is so the rest of us can poke holes in the statement like hitting targets past the 1 km mark with the old school less 10% rifles...
Ha.

Most of the hunting articles I've read about using the 270 on moose end up mentioning the "follow up shots" required. One of the guys I work with used the 270 MSM on a moose. It also required a "follow up shot". I'll stick with 30's and over.

So basically then, If I understand this thread and the positions of everyone who has posted so far, the 270 Win is basically the .40 Cal of the hunting rifle world. Check.

Now I am a 100% sure that regardless of its perceived or actually superiority, I definitely don't need one.

I have a 270 and it's a great cartridge. I also have 7x57's which I would choose over the 270. Just personal preference.

270 seems like it's close to the ideal deer cartridge to me for open country.

It seemed like that to me as well, once.

Then almost 30 years ago the STW showed up and the game changed, for me. For those that had really been paying attention the game had changed in the 1940s. What a .257 or .270 Weatherby, .270 WSM, 7/300, 7 STW, 28
Nosler and slew of others do for open country deer hunters is considerable.

I did say it was 10% less awesome than the 30/06. I should have been more mathematical.

.308 - 10% (which is .0308, but I'll round up to .031) = .277

There, it is a fact the .270 is 10% less than the .30/06! :p

i wonder why the .270 is unfired ...

Forget the diameter, the 270 only has about 3/4 of the AREA of what a 30 cal has.

I have both. I like shooting the 270 better. I will be carrying the 270 this fall. I have no on game experience at all with my 270 or my 3006 although I have seen a friends 270 in action and it worked great. I carried a 7mmwsm for the last 10 years. Time for something else for the next 10.

The 270's are fun cartrages to play with.

A fellow on LRSH forum built a custom 270 rifle with a 28" barrel if I recall.

He's getting pretty good velocities with the 160 and some custom 175gr'ers.

I haven't headed much about since I did the 10% lesser 30/06 thing,,, just finished ranging from 600 too 1000 meters on Sunday as it was hard to see the target due to the forest fire smoke rolling over the mountains.

Hope it clears up so I finish the rest of the way too my 16 or 1700 meter mark.

Nothing like getting this done for the 2018 F Class shooting thing coming up.

I call it the 308 winchester improved as the case volume allows for more gun powder.

Glad I had 30 % more bullet weigth too buck the winds out there,,, I can see the 212's and 220gr bullets doing better at this long range target shooting.
