The $299 Russian Capture K98's at SIR in Winnipeg?

i'd steer clear of the SIR surplus, wen to have a look at these No.4's i heard a guy talking about, was a real nice gun $299, thought a little high, but if it's a minty No.4 with bayo included could at least be worth a look, and here is what i found. a Savage No.4 Mk 1 action. fitted into refinished sporterized stock, no handguard on top of the barrel. it had been cut at about 20 inches or so and had No.5 Jungle Carbine flash suppressor attached, was being billed as a No. 4 carbine. who ever buys that thinking it's a original surplus rifle seserves to be cheated out of $300......

They are alright looking rifles, they shoot pretty good but for $300, I mean I picked up a no5mk1 jungle carbine original in superb condition for only $250 at the last gun show... but hey they're not to bad

I saw the add for the No5 Carbines. Is anyone aware of No5's that were made from No4's in a legit amoury way or indeed are these bubbas?

I can see anyone taking the time now-a-days to do this to a No4?

Claven2, JohnSukey, what is the word?

These were done by Century Arms in Georgia, VT. Same guys that do the AK and Cetme clones worked on these.

Sold out? I went in there 3 or 4 days ago the the guy was all rude saying "we don't have them yet". Then he said they had them, but didn't have them registered and it would take a week at least, and that they weren't taking pre orders.

I can't believe SIR is sold out already. Maybe I'll make a trip down there today. What are the chances "granite" is trying to snag them all out from under our feet?

$750+tax is still a glue huffers price for a P38...

Especially an RC hot-dip refurb P38!!! Even worse if any parts are renumbered (which is likely).

I've heard that some guys down south are restoring them using a process that removes the russkie hot blue but leaves the original finish intact. Some are all matching without the X's, but god knows what's in SIR's batch. Did see some photos of these guns being hand selected though, so who knows. Even then, I wouldn't dream of paying 7 or 8 hundred bux for a P38 that's been thru refurb!

Only ones I heard about where people did that are the ones that were painted black instead of being blued. You just strip off the paint and theres the orig finish, or lack thereof

I called Friday about the status of my RC Mauser on backorder and was told that it was shipped out Thursday.........I let you fellows know how she looks ASAP!

The day I ordered mine the lady on the phone said that she sold 5 or 6, and that there were about six staff on the phonelines so they first order definitely sold fast.

Regards,

Frank

$299 is a good price considering the RC's sell for $200-$250 USD in the States.

I just picked up my RC from the Post Office and am happy with what I've recieved. There's no importer's marks on the rifle and it definitely fits the VG description. I've only taken a cursory look down the bore which seems to have some grease/oil in it, but the rifling appears to be sharp. It's a 1937 rifle with the older style buttplate.

Though I wish we were flooded with enough rifles to bring the cost down, this was definitely a good purchase with prices being as they are at the moment.

Frank

My RC Mauser came in the mail today from SIR. Its a 1941 rifle, ce 41 stamped on the top. lots of proof marks. Looks like it has been to war then stored in a closet for fifty or so years, Exactly what i wasl ooking for my first Mauser. The bore looks good thanks to some good ole#9. I am far from an expert but Id say a decent deal.

Are the rifles in this batch crudely rematched with electropencilled serial numbers on all parts except for the receiver and barrel?

Yes electropencilled serial numbers on the bolt, Trigger guard, magazine plate. Not on the buttplate though I suspect its not to the original rifle either. Would I be correct to assume this was done by the Russians when they were refinishing them?
