The 30-30 club, are you in?

i got a mod 94 ranger and a single shot H & R 30/30. i would not trade the ranger for any money the best gun i ever owned . if i found a 32 spl i would buy it too. hound2013

Sadly, I can't join the club. My 94 is a 32 Special with a Lyman peep.

I do drool a bit over the fancy 30-30 bullets available. I got lucky and bought a stash of old CIL KlingKor soft points for my 32.

One thing about used levers is that one often finds low round goldies often. They were the working guys deer rifle and used very little.

There is the other extreme though. 40 years on the back of a snowmachine tending trap lines!

I've owned and used a number of .30-30 and .32 Special rifles over the years with great success. All were Winchester pre-64 carbines with the exception of one model 64 in .30-30 Ackley Improved and one older Marlin rifle. I have only ever used the 170 grain weight and usually shot factory Winchester silvertips, even in reloads. I prefer a receiver mounted peep like the old Redfield and Lymans for shooting. I shot a number of caribou with the Ackley Improved that launched the 170 grain bullets @2300 fps from the 24" barrel. All were one shot kills and I don't believe that I ever recovered a bullet. Theses were eating caribou and not trophy bulls though and I doubt that any shot was farther the 160 yards. Most likely less than 90 yards. I have used a .30-30 to finish off two moose that were shot by friend with a .243 (separate occasions!) and both went right down when hit. One bullet passed through and one stopped under the hide on the far side.

I like the rifles mostly and carry them often when hunting for pure enjoyment. I have always found them accurate and dependable at woods ranges. They are not the all around rifle that my Husky Swede, .270, or other calibers are however if you can place the bullet correctly and then use some hunting skill (allow the animal to lie down if needed, track them if required, etc) then they are still an excellent tool. Some times I have to pass on a shot that might have been realistic with a more modern rifle, but that's accepted when I take it out. It's all relative after all, because to the bow hunter or smoke pole shooter, they are a modern hunting tool with laser like trajectory. If your comparison is a RemWinGer super mag, then these come up short.

My brother lives in Ontario and uses a Marlin .30-30 with a low powered scope to hunt hardwood stands. It has worked perfectly for him and under those conditions they observe little difference between it and his partner's .308. I told him to get a Savage 99 in .300 Savage but he didn't listen!

Use good ammunition and limit your shooting to what ever range you can routinely hit a clay pigeon and the .30-30 will do the job. I must admit to occasionally carrying a .44-40 in the woods as well however so you can take my input with a grain of nostalgic salt! :)

Leadchucker,

You did a fine job on that Savage bolt gun and it does have unusually nice wood. They have a reputation for being dependable but basic hunting rifles and you have made that one darn nice looking as well.

Nice work on that Savage leadchucker62. I like the layout you chose for the grip area.

There's a guy in calgary who did the work, I found him on kijiji.

Im a lefty so he did the butt sleeve reversed for me, I made the damascus knife and had him built a sheath on the strap for it, if your interested PM me and I can forward his info.

The butt preotector and strap were about $100 each.
