The 30-30 club, are you in?

Not sure whether I have inputted here or not -so here goes

!951 production M94. Typical I've been hunted some here in Central Ont. Sold it a few years ago to a friend to hunt with. Maybe on a deer watch tomorrow morning (I hope)

Still have a minty M788 Remington which I bought years ago to shoot in Cast Bullet Association postal matches. It was the rifle to have at that time to be competitive. Didn't shoot it much and still have it. Not a common rifle here in Ontario. I've only seen two in 50 years.

I've only seen one of the 788's in 30-30, but a few that were re-barrelled to .35/.30-30 for launching hefty boolits up to near 300 gr in 500 meter silhouette matches. If ye wish to sell your one shoot me a PM. (I'll leave 'er in 30-30.)
:)

I had a minty Rem 788 in .30-30 in the 1990's. Was disappointed to find one drawback to it was that spitzer type bullets loaded in the .30-30 cases were typically too long in OAL to feed from the magazine.

IMHO, kinda defeats the purpose of having a bolt action rifle in .30-30 WCF.

Never fired a jacketed bullet through mine. The 788's were very popular for cast bullet shooting in postal competition more than a few years ago. The 30-30 seemed to be an ideal cartridge for cast loads. Ideal capacity with a relatively long neck?. The 788's seemed to be a stiff action even with rear locking lugs. I have also read that lock time was quite fast. I do know they were winners in cast bullet competitions and did well against 788's in 308. Maybe a "fad" thing at the time?
I also have one in 222Rem and it too was quite accurate with jacketed bullets.
One thing about the 788's- you could never really call them "pretty rifles" (my opinion only)

I can certainly see the value of a Rem 788 in .30-30 for that purpose.

As for the Rem 788, in general, I'm a fan. Have also had them in .308 Win & still have a 'keeper' in 7mm-08.

I plopped alot of whitetail deer & coyotes with 788s in 222 & 308, paired up with Leupolds. South Saskatchewan prairie.

Recently scored this gem.... 1949 mfg Marlin 336A in .30-30 Winchester with vintage Lyman peep site..... 24" barrel with 3/4 mag tube....

Looks more appropeeate.

Mossberg 464 late model.
My go-to deer rifle. I have many 94's and 336's but this guy gets it done on the cheap and very accurate

I had a Steven's 325 bolt gun in 30-30. Took down a Russian boar in Tennessee with it. Didn't much like the action so I sold it. Just this year I picked up a '94 "antique" from a fellow CGN'r and absolutely love it!
