The 760/7600 Club

Woo Hoo !! Just picked up a new 7600 carbine in .35 Whelen. Replaced the hockey puck they call a recoil pad with a Remington Supercell pad and replaced the rear sight with a Williams WGRS peep sight. Sighted it in at 50 yards with Remington factory 200 grain bullets gave me a 1.5" group off the bench. Not bad for my old eyes and accurate enough for where we deer hunt.Looking forward to using it for deer this fall. I have some 220 grn Speer flat points and 225 grn Accubonds that I use in my 22" rifle. Will do some load development when time permits. Cheers bac4

And why not 10 rounds in a hunting rifle?
If one needs more than 4 shots on tap in a hurry while sport hunting, there's something wrong. A 10 shot magazine is originally a military configuration and for good reason, it was designed for wartime, but it also makes the sporting rifle far too heavy in my hands and makes the magazine too large for a one handed carry so my statement is made purely from a practical standpoint.

You probably have spare ammo in pocket or pack or something. Why not spare rounds in the magazine? No different.
It is different, please see above. I carry a full spare magazine for my 760s on a belt pouch in order to keep the rifle as light and handy as possible.

Because we still can. If we give them an inch, they'll take a mile

If you want to carry a rifle with a big clumsy mag because you "still can", have fun. I prefer my rifles, esp 760s to be handy and as light as possible.

My statement was made from a purely practical standpoint but you may have missed that little bit of info. I, in no way, agree with legislated mag. restrictions. :)

I have some ammo for you if you remind me.

you are going to get muzzle jump with a .35 Whelen in a light gun. If you are getting 2 inches for three shots at a hundred yards that's excellent hunting accuracy. Just sayin'.....;)

Doug

Doug I found some gold box Federal and it's shooting 1.25-1.5" now. Happy happy.

Here's the Whelen:

What do you guys do about the length of pull on these rifles?

My old pump action Savage 170 had a foreend that started pretty close to the receiver and was easy to shoot with your arm close to your body. The internals were junk, but it was a very ergonomically friendly rifle.

My brother in law had 70s-vintage 760 in .30-06 that had our arms stuck wayyyyyyy out there trying to hang on to the forend, and neither of us are short guys. It had the later 760 style forend, not the original smoother streamlined 50s style. He sold it because we could never figure out how to shoot it well.

I've looked at a lot of these guns since but never bought one because I remember how that one was so miserable to shoot. Are there some models that are better than others?

I have had the same problem with shotguns with that crappy corncob forend. My buddy had a Winchester 120 with the shortend forend that was a misery to shoot; I had a later Winchester 1300 with the forend that extended further back, and it was a dream. I have looked for a similar forend for 760s or 7600s for a while and have never seen one.

It's hard to tell the condition by that picture but the buttstock seems perfect. In excellent condition I'd say 4-500$ with or without the scope. I think of Banner as a rimfire/airgun scope.

The rifle is certainly much more rugged and capable than that scope. A new scope (and possibly scope rings) would give you a great kit. Budget between 350$-1200$.

Then if you plan to keep it and use it there's always customizing to do.
If the recoil is hard on you or others users you could replace the plastic butt plate with a Limbsaver recoil pad and use the opportunity to cut a custom lenght of pull.
If you'd like it more handy and accurate you could have the barrel shortened to 18.5"-20".
In the accuracy departement a good trigger job or Timney trigger pack is always helpful.
