Lately I've been getting ready for spring bear, and thought that this year I want to use my 8MM mauser, being last year I used my 7x64 with 175gr at a decent velocity of 2700 fps on a successful hunt. Since I'm a 8MM fan, I have almost every type of 8mm bullet available on the market and having used most of them on game, I decided I either wanted to use the 170gr Speer Semi-Spitzer or 170gr hornady SST that haven't proven themselves to me quite yet.

So I went to work on my loading bench, looking through my loads I have used in the past and a few new loads from loading manuals. I tried 49.5gr of IMR of 4064 with the 170 speer going 2580 fps in my Husky with a 23.6 inch barrel. Accuracy was fine off the quad seat and with a 4X Weaver scope but velocity was on the low end. I then looked in a older Hornady manual that showed the 170gr at 2800fps. Knowing my rifle being capable of taking very hotloads, I decided to give it a try. Accuracy was good, ( like I mentioned earlier, resting on the quad seat and with a 4X Power weaver). I'm sure if I put my self on the bench fully rested the accuracy will improve drastically.

I tired the loads over my Chrony and got a velocity of 2791 fps, pretty close to the book, right? Bolt lift was good and there was no signs of significant pressure. This load will be great bear medicine, and will try to harvest a nice meat bear this year. If I do happen to cross paths with a nice bear, I will post pictures of the hunt. Looking forward on a good year of hunting.

Like I mentioned the 8MM Mauser Ain't no slouch and is the equivalent of the 308 Win/ 30-06 in power.

Feel free to post experiences and pictures with your 8MM.

Happy Shooting!

Here are some picture of my results of using the time proven 8MM.

Spring bear taken with 180gr Ballistic tip @ 2740 fps at 225 yards.

Cougar taken with 195 Gr Hornady INT @ 2350 fps at 50 yards

cougar.JPG

Mule 4X Buck taken with 180 GMX @ 2700 fps at 165 yards

Whitetail buck taken with 200gr Speer SP @ 2540 FPS at 30 Yards. Front chest shot and bullet recovered the offside skin stuck in between a rib bone by the rear lungs .

Most of these Decent bucks were taken with my 8MM's over the years.

EDIT: Bear Down today being June 17/2017, The Lords blessing! and biggest Boar to date, from back foot to front foot 7ft on the dot, or back foot to nose 6ft 6inches. Saw him around 120 yards and disappeared, stalked in to about 80 yards and I gained sight of him again, one shot from my 8x57 ( 8MM mauser ) with 170gr @ 2790 fps is all it took. Dropped on the spot and stayed there. Bullet impacted his neck and exited. Great performance from the good ole Husqvarna 8x57!!

2Nd black bear this year. Not as big as the one from the spring, but still a good eating bear. Shot with my Sauer 100xt in 8x57 with 198gr RWS torpedo bullet @ 2600fps. Boar was on the run @ 50 yards, took the back of his head out. Bear is approx. 5-11,6ft.

and this is news?- my old pacific manual( published back in 67) says we can load 8mm for 06 pressure levels

Nice cat! What did it measure? I went with a 338WM to jump up past my 30-06 once I decided to start going to the larger end of the medium bores. Your old 8mm gets the job done.

Nicely done, Daniel...

I am a fan of the 8X57 case, but not so much at 8mm... I use it at 6mm, .25 cal, 7mm, and I am now working on a 7.62 Medium Mauser... which is the 8X57 necked down to .30 cal with no other changes.

8x57 is a great cartridge. Used mine last year in South Africa to take Springbok, Impala, Gemsbok, Waterbuck and Kudu. My boys and I have taken moose, black bear, mulie and I don't know how many whitetail with this cartridge. I have to say I've taken the vast majority of my game with this cartridge. No flies on the 8x57! I've started to used the 8x64 in the last few years but this only gains about 100-150fps using the 196gr bullets (same as I use in the 8x57).

I like the 8x57, mine all like the 170gr Speer hot-cores, shoots them really well.
I have 2 '96's (HVA and Vapen) and 1 HVA 98. I don't hot rod them, just load for accuracy. Probably give the 180 BT a go shortly, always had good luck with those in other calibers.

I've never been a fan of the 8mm bore size, but aside from my unreasonable prejudices, in a good rifle the 8X57 is accurate, versatile, and powerful. In theory, a 150 gr 8mm bullet produces higher velocity than a .30 caliber bullet of equal weight, fired from a cartridge of similar capacity, at equal pressure, but the 8mm's BC isn 't quite as good, so I expect trajectory is essentially equal. From the standpoint of versatility, the .30s and the .338s are both preferable to the 8mms, due to their wider bullet selection.

it's not the cartridge, but the LACK OF PROJECTILES that kills the 8mm for me- and those that do come are at an almost custom price= using the 170 for the 32 special results in an almost 308 , and using the norma 196 results in a 06- now I have a plethora of 308s to choose from and a 338 bar- why bother with a 8mm?

Nicely done! Nice bear and what's the story on the cat?

The 8x57 is one of my favourites, I've taken Coyotes to Elk with it.

There's a 200 grain Nosler Partition, so bullet selection is more than adequate. Lately I've acquired some 160 TTSXs and CFE 223.

2 years ago there wasn't a rifle in my vault that flung a .323 bullet now there is 4 or 5. I thought the same thing about bullet selection till I bought a 325 WSM and started looking at what was available........I was actually impressed with the selection, 150 gn right up to 250 gn. With bullets available from virtually every major maker, in prices from reasonable to as expected for Nosler Parts and Woodleighs. I'm the kind of guy that only ever matches one bullet to a cartridge when I find one that shoots real well and is in the weight range I deem appropriate for what I wish to do with that cartridge, I generally just load them all up at that point and "call 'er good". Hell Barnes even makes a TTSX and a couple TSX for it, Nosler, Sierra, Speer, Hornady, Privi, Woodleigh, Norma and on, and on, and on....Not sure how much more selection a guy needs for a hunting caliber.
I think I would feel adequately armed for anything NA has to offer with an 8mm RM/8X68S and a good stiff load behind a 220 Swift A-Frame, or if I was feeling particularly insecure a 250 Woodleigh. Even my WSM with a 200 gn Part should be a killing machine.........Easily on par with or even better than a 338 WM.

Indeed the 8x57 is no slouch at all, my father has killed quite a few buffalos and one pest bull elephant during is life with his service Mauser in east Africa.

Like I mentioned the 8MM Mauser Ain't no slouch and is the equivalent of the 308 Win/ 30-06 in power.

This is news ? Biggest thing against it is the selection of bullet weights available in. 308

Grizz
