The 8MM Mauser ( 8x57JS) ain't no slouch *Update: Bear Down!*

Nice bear. I too like the 8mm, so much so that I have two Husqvarna rifles in 8x57. I used one of them to take my first bear this year.

Good old 8x57. I love shooting the old Yugo surplus stuff in an ugly old M48. Kicks like a mule.

Splitting hairs isn't my thing. I have used Sierra 150 gr (not sure of the Sierra name) in an 8mm/06 to great effect on whitetail over the years.

My 8mm loves 200 gr. accubonds and has a nice long throat in a 98 Mauser - lots of power in a rifle that handles it easily. quite a cartridge when you roll your own.

What kind of velocities do the 8x68s get with 200 grainers?

47.5 Varget 2650
52 Win 760 2650
58 N160 2700
52 H4350 2700

Sorry. Just noticed you asked about 8x68. The above data is for 8x57

8x68RWS

78 RL19 3000

BTW, if you are into custom chambers, the 8-06 Ackley is easy to make with 30-06 brass and delivers around 2,950 fps with 200 gr bullets.

We came close to shoot'in one.
Only thing is.............SHE had three cubs.
Nice to see them even iff'in they ain't shootable.

2Nd black bear this year. Not as big as the one from the spring, but still a good eating bear. Shot with my Sauer 100xt in 8x57 with 198gr RWS torpedo bullet @ 2600fps. Boar was on the run @ 50 yards, took the back of his head out. Bear is approx. 5-11,6ft.

I picked up a bubba'ed bcd 4- K98 with a mint barrel /non-reversable mods with a laminated 1/2 stock [victim of a hacksaw] as a loaner ,beater hiking rifle for bear country. The dam thing cloverleafs with the third opening the group to just under 1/2" At 100 yards! Will pick up some dies and decide on a bullet weight. Was shooting the win 170gr factory that came with the gun. ...........Harold
