After some encouragement from CGN members, here's a picture of a bear I got last Thursday evening.

Chocolatebear2.jpg

Dark cordovan brown, thickly furred up, not rubbed at all. He is a real melon-head with huge neck. Measures a bit more than six and a half inches across the front paws.

One shot, 270 gr Speer ahead of 58 gr IMR 4064, hit just behind the shoulder, he went about twenty yards and piled up.

Bullet exited, lungs all jellied up, and far shoulder broken. So much for the Speer bullet being too soft for big game. :)

Very nice bear. :) Congratulations!

How far away was he when you shot him?

Can you elaborate a bit on the rifle? (is it an FN Mauser?)

Very nice bear Ted
and to think you got it with a cartridge designed in 1905 shooting a cup and core speer bullet ,you know one of those old fashioned ones filled with lead. I thought it woulda for sure bounced off or blew to pieces upon touching the first hair on its hide or over expanded and not penetrated far enough to reach the vitals. Geez I just dont know what to believe anymore, next thing you'll say is the rifle wasnt stainless!

NICE BEAR!! ......... You sure you didn't get your wife to shoot that for you?

It's well known in Whitehorse that "Mrs. WhyNot" is the better shot in the family. :D

Nice bear Ted, love the colouring. As others have said, details on the rifle always appreciated. If you believed half the "stuff" on these forums, you would never have tried actually shooting a bear with a cup and core bullet. Of course, many more "experts" that talk about hunting than actually do much!
