The 9.3X62 bear.

Well done Ted, any idea what that brute would weigh?

Nope, but it was quite a handful for River Rat and I, even with the guts out. Pretty big for a black bear.

Nice bear Ted, love the colouring. As others have said, details on the rifle always appreciated. If you believed half the "stuff" on these forums, you would never have tried actually shooting a bear with a cup and core bullet. Of course, many more "experts" that talk about hunting than actually do much!

The rifle is my old pre-war Model 70, that I had rebarreled with one of Les Bauska's cut-rifled tubes about twenty years ago. The stock eventually gave up, and I "temporarily" put it into a RamLine until I could get another decent stock. It shot so well that I left it in there.

The RamLine makes it even better than a Stevens 200, right? :)

Great Job Ted.

Best part of all is now that you are using the x62 you may as well send me your x57 dies. It would appear I have switched back to the little brother for a spell.

BUM, you are going to be in for a big suprise. These 9,3 fans are everywhere. You won't always hear from them cuz they don't need to prove what the best bear caliber is. They already know!

Gorgeous bear Ted, congrats!

Very nice bear. I agree with your assessment of the Speer bullets, I used the 350 gr Magtip in my .416, and it proved to be accurate and reliable.

Now, how about some details. Were you still hunting, shooting over a bait, what's the story?

What were his teeth like? Do you think he was an older bear? Also there has to be more to the story...

Man that is an exceptional black bear!

That's pretty much my dream black bear actually. I am hoping someday to get a 7-1/2' chocolate colored bear, but I'd take that guy... :p

NICE BEAR!! ......... You sure you didn't get your wife to shoot that for you?

It's well known in Whitehorse that "Mrs. WhyNot" is the better shot in the family. :D

She certainly is a great shot, and has probably killed more big game, including bears, than most of the guys on the board, but she didn't get this one! :)

Boomer, I have always had good results with the Speer bullets, especially the 150 gr spitzer 270 and the 250 gr spitzer 358. Have used them in the 270 Win, 270 Wby 358 Win and 358 Norma Mag. Never, not once, have I had one fail to expand well and penetrate deeply.

The 270 gr 9.3 bullet appears to perform the same. Garry's moose from two years ago went down on the spot, straight on shot, penetrated about a foot of neck muscle, chopped up three vertebrae and lodged in the fouth. Again, I have no idea where guys get the idea they are too soft.

There is no baiting of bears in the Yukon. It is all spot and stalk. In this hunt, River Rat and myself and our wives were camping on the Yukon River, and the plan was to hunt the river using my twenty-two foot freighter canoe. The weather was crazy windy so we just hung around camp and ate and told stories, and ate and kept the fire burning, and ate and slept, and ate.........:D

On Thursday evening we went for a drive and both Garry and I got a bear. Nothing spectacular, just saw them and took them. His in the trees and mine in an old burn. Both shots were under fifty yards.

One tooth is chipped off and the rest were in pretty good condition. Not worn even near the gum line. I will let you know his age when I get the report back from the game branch. They took a tooth sample to age the bear. The skull measures 18 9/16.

The meat is delicious. Not any gamey taste at all. Had two meals already, and getting some sausage made right now. River Rat smoked the four sides of ribs. We will have them for a special occasion down the road.

It's too bad Speer wouldn't make a 270gr flat base 375 cal bullet with the same reputation as the three you mention.

They're missing the boat on this one.

Why not? thanks for the replies. I would have thought your bear's skull was bigger but that's still very good.

Sounds like a relaxing weekend. I could use a hunt like that.
