The AK-47 Ammo Crisis

Unless...he's talking about the AK-74, which I thought was an American version of the AK-47.

AK74 is by no means American version of anything. It was a russian design to replace the AK47, which it did pretty much. Its still in wide use by the russians since afghanistan.

i was talking to my russian friend who was in the military during the cold war.

was issued with an ak74 on the chineese border.

He said the bullets they issued him spinned because they were fighting a vastly superiour armed forces.

I must say I rather enjoyed this 'unique and novel' perspective.

FWIW, the AK-47 in 7.62 is still widely issued to some russian troops depending on alot of factors. True, the 5.45mm is the main issue caliber in the Russian army, but the 7.62 is still around.

Also, I dispute the fact that "most" of Russia's allies have also switched to 5.45mm. In fact, I'd go so far as to say most have NOT. There are still more AK's in the world shooting 7.62 than anything else.
