For Vancouver Island I vote for the 7mm Mauser, for the rest of Canuckystan the vote goes for the .338 or 300 mag.
Same could be said for the 7.62x54R Russian. Only it was adopted in 1891 with the Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle.
I think it would be worthwhile for people to consider the original question posted by the originator of the thread:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I apologize if this topic has already come up a million times, my searches gave me nothing.
I don't know if it exists, but I'm looking for your guys' opinion of the most versatile hunting round. One that is enough for a bear, a deer or a moose, available at any shop, economical and accurate.
If you could only have one, what would it be?
So:
1. Canadian big game.
2. Ammo easily found anywhere.
3. Cheap.
4. Accurate.
That should help most folks focus on a small number of cartridges, including ones that have been mentioned like .308, .30-06 and .303 Br. With the moose and bear in there, I myself would take out the .308, but can easily agree to leave it there. Let's face it, there have been millions of words spent on this topic over countless hunt camp campfires and tables, and we are not going to solve it!

Love the 308 Win. I have shot many deer and moose always one shot for the kill. The 308win is very close to 30-06 and with hand loads well matched for big game. The other great thing about the 308 is it comes in short action. While the 30-06 comes in the long action (more weight and bolt throw). I have darn near had every caliber from 222rem to 375HH and always seem to go back to trusty 308win come opening day. There are many great hunting calibers out there find what meets your needs and confidence when making that big shot.
