The all new Famae flat top.

Does the integrated flat top hold zero better than the removable rail of the original design?

Highly doubtful. The mounting design of the removable rail is pretty rock-solid if correctly installed.

Sadly, there is no readily-apparent work-around for the inability to mount replacement Iron Sights on this new "flat-top" version. That relegates the SG 542 to range-toy status in my view, as it cannot serve as a satisfactory defensive rifle without backup irons.

I have to admit the lack of iron sights was a major deciding factor in my not buying this rifle. I don't own a single firearm without them, even ones where I mostly use an optic.

In all honesty the flat top rail is rock solid compared to the removable rail version. It was always coming loose after 150 or so round down the pipe. My famae sg524 1m has nerver had that issue yet.

You can throw a piggybacked or side mounted RDS for back up. BUIS are only useful for optics with QD mounts anyway. The upside to integrated top rail is theoretically a stronger mounting surface as their is one less interface. Also some weight savings. The demographic for this rifle are collectors though so it’s strange they would go without the iron sights as most collectors want models closest to original configuration.

Maybe some aftermarket rails will come out. That would make the flat top version superior to the original drum iron version as you can mount more modern BUIS and/or a whole bunch of other accessories.

re:irons grumbling, i heard the previous batch of famae rifles had issues with the irons related to poor paint coatings obstructing the rear drum sight aperture, and also all the rear sight welds i saw looked like dr. bubba did it. hideous!

please recommend me a piggyback scope mount, or a quick detach with offset mount too :)

Spuhr or Badger Ordnance.

Loctite. Saves on having to re-tighten your optic mounting base every 150 or so rounds down the pipe.

Can this rifle accept .308 ammo?
Is the bolt/chamber rugged enough?

Yes. The SG 542 is directly derived from a military service rifle. It has fired proof rounds with pressures far higher than those of the .308 cartridge. You can fire civilian ammo from the SG 542 without concern....

Thanks!
I kept reading conflicting info online about .308 not being able to be fired from a 7.62x51 NATO bolt.

That is pretty much "internet bumpf". The only militaries that employed underpowered 7.62x51mm ammunition were the Spanish Forces of the 1960s and 70s with the CETME rifle and the Japanese with their Type 64 Rifle from 1964-1988. Everyone else has used full-power NATO specification ammunition, which is plenty punchy in its own right. Any 7.62mm NATO-specification rifle can readily handle civilian .308 fodder.
