The all round calibler

I'm looking for opinions on what is the best caliber if i want to shoot anything from a fox to a deer? Is there such a well rounder caliber? I was thinking about a .243............what do u think?

.223 - 60gr partition for deer and something like a 55gr A max for foxes

do you want the fox pelt or not? If so .243//6mm/.257 roberts should be Ok. If you don't care about the pelt I would go .308 or 30-06 you can then do moose or bear later if you want.

If you are a handloader you can get a lot of versatility out of the 6.5x55 Swede - anything from a 95 grain to a 160 grain bullet can be used.

well i'm in southeren ontario so anything over a 30 cal is not good for me. i do like the 243 but i am just concerned that it doesn't have enough for a deer.......although i talk to guys who shoot deer with 222 but i'm not confident that i could make a good shot with something that small.

Anything suitable for deer isnt going to be a good choice for fox...they are 15 lb dogs

Anything in the .243/.257/.264 should do you fine as far as cartridge 'power', but you probably wouldn't want to use the same bullets to hunt both types of animals.

A .243 with 100-grain partitions for deer, and 75-grain v-max for varmints, would be pretty sweet. You can duplicate that setup on the .260 Rem as well.

If you stay with fox to deer size stuff your 243 would be just dandy.
If you want to toss bear and moose into the mix you cant beat a 30-06.If you dont load your own ammo there are factory loaded 30-06 for everything from G-hogs to moose and not crazy prices.

The 243 will Dump ANY Deer on it's A$$ with Good bullets and of course "shot placement"
FWIW...
I took a little 5x5 Whitetail Buck a week or so ago with my 260 with 125 grain Partition (not a Big step up from a 243 ) anyways that little bullet went in through the left front shoulder, broke up alot of bone...continued on to remove the tops of both lungs and the heart...then exited out the Far side breaking a rib and left about an 1-1/2" sized exit......all that at about 200 Meters.

You don't need Much more then that to Kill a Deer

The .243 is "abit" much for Foxes though...Lots of Folks use it for Yotes so it's not ridiculous either
