The all round calibler

Did some one say 3006, most versatile caliber in the world? If not I am saying it now.

Andy

From 90 gr. to 250gr. need I say more.

257 Roberts
100 Grain generic PSP at 2800 for deer
75 grain HP at 3300 for varmints

X2 .... except my 257Roberts gets 3100 or more with 100gr bullet.

I've chronyed it as fast as 3300, but I considered that load a bit hot.

.

he did say he is from S. Ontario same as I and in the south using 30 cal rounds are out of the question...which is why I own a 270. That would do the trick too since you can find 100gr factory rounds or load 90 varmitters...shooting deer with 130, 140 150's would be sufficient.

You don't have to get two rifles. Get one of the rifles that have different barrels you can swap to. A 7mm08, .260 rem., .308 barrel for deer and a .223, .222, .22 hornet or .17 HRM for foxes. (T/C encore, or a Rossi or...)

Or a Savage Over and Under in 30/30 over 20 ga.

All around caliber for Fox to Deer?
I have a question, are you hunting Fox for fur or just varmint control?
Because if your looking for a fur friendly fox killer it's gonna be a little light for Deer.
Conversely an adequate deer caliber/load is gonna be brutal on Fox hides.

I'm looking for opinions on what is the best caliber if i want to shoot anything from a fox to a deer? Is there such a well rounder caliber? I was thinking about a .243............what do u think?
This is not a 'All Round Calibre'. That would be a rifle that you could take anywhere it it would do the job for you. In this case, would you need is a fairly small bore rifle, max .308 bore I would say.

If you are a handloader you can get a lot of versatility out of the 6.5x55 Swede - anything from a 95 grain to a 160 grain bullet can be used.

+2 on this.
IMHO It's a very cool cartridge.

well i'm in southeren ontario so anything over a 30 cal is not good for me. i do like the 243 but i am just concerned that it doesn't have enough for a deer.......although i talk to guys who shoot deer with 222 but i'm not confident that i could make a good shot with something that small.
I just got back from my hunting trip and I took a 220 lb mule deer buck 5\6 at 350 yrds. I checked the range with my gps. The bullet [over the counter] 100 gr took out his left front leg on entry, blew out the lungs and still had enough left to break a rib on the other side. BCKID

One All Round Cal

I agree with Prosper to get two guns. But I would go for the 223 and 7-08. The 223 is cheap to shoot and capable of shooting any small critter. It will also work on Deer but you have to be close and accurate. The 7-08 would be my second choice because I like the reports on it's performance. The 7mm round has proved itself for years, just look at it's history.

That's my opinion, and you won't get too many that will agree on one answer. One question will get 100 different opinions.
Pick and choose.
