The all round calibler

Wrong Way:

The guy is asking for a caliber for fox to deer. I think a .243 will do the job. The largest deer I have shot with .243 is 207 lbs field dressed. Ther is no doubt in my mind the .243 can kill deer with proper bullets over 300 lb if you know where to shoot.

It is a valid point that .243 ammo is easy to find.

However, if he is hunting for bear and moose I would agree with you to go with a larger caliber rifle.

Agreed...I just took exception to sv7772 saying:
.243 has distance speed and will kill pretty well any animal on north american soil. as long as the shooter does his part.

Thats a pretty big expectation from the .243.

And BTW, the whole "You can buy ammo at the hardware store" argument is one of those that gets under my skin.

Bring ammo. If you are truly worried that you may forget your ammo (shaking my head now)...give a box to a couple of your hunting buddies to bring as insurance.

Oh yeah, and 270 amo is way more common at the ma&pop stores than .243:p

Calibre doesn't make a whole heckuva lotta difference. Get something that will be allowed, that brings you to .275 or less (.270 win is actually .277), but the critical factors are affordability and shooting comfort. The recoil must be manageable and ammo cheap enough to get in suffiecient practice.

I own rifles from 577/450 down to .17 Rem, but the big deal is that I go hunting most often with a .308 (I am NOT in southern Ont, obviously). I am NOT recoil shy, but have shot enough ammunition under all conditions to know that I can always expect my performance to be better out of a well fitting rifle in a "mild" calibre.
