The ammo Shortage of 2013, We have seen the enemy and it is us

Got off the phone a hour ago talking to friends in Michigan. Limit of two boxes of 22's per customer per day. Want to get more go to every dealer and hope to get a few more boxes.

Some cal's almost impossible to find.

Handguns very hard to find, they will get one from their CC instructor.

I have no problem with anyone who hoards, free country and if you have the money go for it.

new shooters are having little to no impact on the ammunition shortage in the U.S and Canada as far as I can tell.....its hoarding plain and simple. Take a look around...look at your own ammo supply for example...and be honest about it. I myself have more 22lr than I'll ever shoot, and my hoard of 9mm and 40 S&W is just stupid. I've never owned as much ammo in my life....purely panic buying

ammo shortage?
In some places in the US yes. Was in Arizona for business couple of weeks ago.

Here, none at all.
Was in 3 gun stores in Edmonton this week.
All the 9mm, 22, 308 or 7.63x39 you can carry.
Cabelas started Canada Day Sale today, including 22 and 9mm (not really cheap sale for my taste, but whatever).

Not that I needed anything, I buy bulk when some of the CGN sponsors have sales.

That was showing out of stock 2 days ago. Not that I'd pay that now. I'm still working on my cheap HOARD.

Which proves the point.

It is coming in regularly (contrary to some people's previous claims the the distributors have no more and can't get any this year), and sometimes in huge quantities, but people are buying it because they BELIEVE it will not come back (or soon).

But it does come back, and regularly.

So if people would stop panic buying, things would go back to normal in short order.

Too much nancy talk here. What I want to know is where can I find some .308 cal 208 amax's, 210 berger hunting vld's, and a couple pounds of RL-22? Like yesterday!

Local, as in I want it yesterday, meaning I want to drive to the store and pick it up so i can burn them up on sunday.

Many posters here are not putting the ammo shortage into context. Its really a U.S. phenomena, and since most of our ammo comes form the U.S. we will see some affect. Most ammo coming to Canada was ordered almost a year ago, so U.S. manufacturers honour those orders and send the ammo as they make it, no big deal so ammo supplies in Canada are for the most part pretty good. There are no new shooters coming into the market in Canada so the market stays somewhat neutral. What is beginning to happen is things like reloading supplies, volume 22 ammo and other things which were not preordered to the same scale are becoming limited in supply in Canada. In the U.S. its a WHOLE different ball game. Many are hoarding, many new shooters are coming into the market either for the first time, or returning and stocking up. EVERYONE buying is stocking up, AND suppliers are saying that they are having a hard time sourcing the raw materials to meet demand, thus a shortage. Plain and simple. OF COURSE THE BUYERS ARE THE ENEMY, duh they are the ones who want the ammo and can't buy it. The consumer is conditioned to buy what they want when they want and has had the luxury of being able to do that, till now. If anyone thinks the shortage is only a result of previous gun owners on a buying spree, they are sadly misunderstanding the whole picture in the U.S.

Says who?

Folks are lining up for PAL courses to get firearms. They then buy guns and ammo...and so the cycle goes.

not sure the lines are significantly longer than in previous years. There is a normal cycle of gun ownership in Canada is there not? or is it a fast growing sport in Canada??

Yup.

Number of PAL holders continues to climb here (up nearly 100,000 over last year).

Then again, so do the number of vendors of firearms and ammunition, from the increased new board sponsors here, to the increased number of Walmarts and CTs (many even getting back into selling firearms and not just ammo) on the scene.

In fact, never in the 3 decades years I have been buying ammunition have I seen the selection I do even today. So many choices on what to buy, and where to buy it (I can even buy it online).

Manufactures are putting out more than ever before, and in more variety from actual products never before available, to gimmicks of rebranded ammunition and celebrity endorsements.

It is a good time to be a shooter.

PS: Does someone want to ask Dizzy how the hell I can order a product from CT (bulk backed Stingers in a plastic ammo can) that was not even on the market a year ago (and have it in less than a month) if the only thing the stores are getting is stuff they ordered last year? As for "raw materials" not being able to be had, someone better notify SFRC and tell Ryan all the Wolf remanufactured ammunition he keeps getting in must be fake or imaginary.

I wish people would stick to facts, and stop with their theory of what is happening which fuels the fear mongering.

One could and probably would call me a conspiracy theorist, tinfoil and whatnot but I think the gov and the public are getting ready to duke it out, look at all the corruption and revolutions worldwide you wanna be armed with many bullets if that happens. The trust between citizens and gov is none existent, they know they want the guns and people are saying no way I want all the ammo I can get if that's the case.

I like the tinfoil choice. :)

With the economy tanking and shows like Doomsday Preppers on TV, a bunch of new gun owners are merely preparing for a version of SHTF/TEOTWAWKI. And they also buy stacks of ammo to go with those new firearms.

Canadian Tire is great for bulk .22 ... Go to sport desk. give sku# order as much as you want. wait 3-6 weeks and they call you to pick it up...

Hey DILLIGAF, Dart. crossing ctc will be getting rifles and shotguns next year, trying to talk them into getting sks too!
Lets hope it catches on and more of them get back into the firearm business! I am going to go to the Manger and convince him of the benefits of sponsoring here on the cgn!

Greenwood CT is also getting firearms... If its like the one in Gagetown, Its just basic guns nothing special... But if it gets more people into shooting then its all good...
