The AR-180b - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

I like mine, use it for hunting and plinking. It is one whole hell of a lot easier to clean than an AR and lighter. That said if the AR were not restricted I would have one in a heartbeat because they can be made into real tack drivers.

It is friggen loud needs to change from a muzzle brake to a flash hider
the fact that it can actually be used to kill gophers and yotes makes it 1000's times better than an ar 15 killing paper gets BORING

Well the cat is sort of out of the bag. I really wanted to hold off until I had at least a protoype started but I couldn't wait. I'm in the very early stages of making a sheet metal lower for my AR180B. Hopefully I will have the plans finalized this week to have the bending dies made up. I stole the idea from a sheet metal AR15 build on the HomeGunSmith.com forums.

IF things work as planned, and not too many changes are made to the design, kit lowers are entirely possible. Don't expect mass production, this will most likely be a backyard, when I have spare time thing. There would be no machining to do (or very minor that could be done with a file and some time). I hope to have the final design set up so that, at the minimum, a lower could be finished with a power drill, hand files, and some taps for you garage builder guys. Preferably, it would be welded but screwing together could work (with the current on paper only design). There is no chance at all, ever, of me selling a finished lower. I'm not shelling out the money for a manufacturers liscence.

Don't expect some wiz bang fancy looking lower but it will hopefully look half decent.I'll post more information as I go.

I bought a used ar180b from a fellow nutz a little while back.
I like the rifle, although the LOP is/was too short so I added a beartooth slip on recoil pad with spacers and its much better now.
I'm working up some loads and its shooting 1 1/2-2" consistently with a 4x scope. It came with the Armalite scope mount which definitely needed some tweaking, but it's working good now.The trigger is craptastic.
I like the rifle in its stock configuration and its non restricted to boot.
I dumped a coyote with it last week,so its all good. GJ

i have both an ar15 and ar180b

both are great to shoot and both are quite accurite

ar180b is a lot louder due to the muzzle break that defects sound only upward

i built my ar15 from a 80% lower and pieced it all together from parts, so as a project gun, i found the ar15 more of a challange and more rewarding once it was done

but the ar180b as a project gun is also quite fun. i have mounted a rail on the bottom handguard /w a vertical grip and put a ar15 collabsible stock on mine

after putting the rail/vertical grip on and stormwerkz rail & stock addon for the ar180b, i spent about the same as on my ar15.

i like them both, and for differant reasons,
of course the main reason is one is a bush gun and one is a range gun

I hope you document the project well with pics and drawings of your fixtures and tooling to be passed along ;)
Hey, maybe I'll send you a free kit in exchange for a few small parts I need for other projects. ;)

I'd buy one the minute I can have that kind of money in the account ... been saying the same thing about the M-305 for over 2 years mind you ....

Being that the user does the finish work, I don't think the lowers would be too expensive. It would be on par to a striped or 80% AR15 lower, I would think.

I'm leaning towards setting them up to use ACE stocks, so you'd have to buy that. AR15 trigger group is used so those parts are simple enough to come by. I'm leaning towards the AR180B type mag release but modified so you can manipulate it from the exterior of the rifle, I'll make those. If this goes ahead, maybe we could get a group buy going through wolverine for complete AR180B uppers, just the upper.

But I'm getting way ahead of myself. Far to much time for day dreaming these past few days. :D

I agree, it is very loud. I have a 2000 watt stereo system in my truck and even with ear protection on, shooting this gun hurts my ears, but it is very very cool. It does have that cheap feel, but, I like the plastic lower for some reason. I put on a rail, I would like different handgaurds and an M-16 style stock, has anybody heard of one? But for non-restricted and black, I love it absolutly love it. Take care all......................Spanky

The AR180B takes the follwoing AR15 parts; trigger, hammer and all related springs; Bolt and firing pin; Rear site apature, front sight post.

I highly recommend threading the barrel on putting on a flash hider, does wonders for the noise! As for AR15 stocks, get a Storm Werkz type 2 adapter and put on an M4 carbine stock.

It doesn't use AR15 bolt and pin? Hmm, after all these years...
Right........it has a gas piston configuration. It releases the bolt carrier, so impingement delay for the bolt is not required, theirfore....no gas rings on bolt; gotcha. Nice! I completely forgot the AR 180b used a short-stroke gas piston; that is one big plus.
Is it adjustable, or any after market retrofit to make it adjustable?
