if your looking for home defence / camping then your gonna want a Mossberg 500/590 or a Winchester Defender or a Remington 870 as you can actually carry them around legally and unless your trained and out at the range twice a week you might actually be able to hit something when you need too.

If 1911's are your thing, get the Norico. It is something that is easily upgraded over a period of time, and there are great deals going on at numerous sponsors: Canada ammo for one. A cheap solution, to get ammo, and have a toy that can be individually customized at whim.
 
For home defence where function and reliability are primordial, I'd go with a reputable duty pistol. Glock, SIG, Beretta, etc... Model and caliber; you've got a lot of options!
