The best rifle and scope to hunt a deer, might a moose?

I'd go with a Savage 11F in 308... Not the cheapest, but a hell of a bang for your buck... I'd put a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 on it... You'd be under a 1000 dollars for sure and I bet it would shoot right around 1/2 an inch at 100 meters...

Cheers
Jay

The new Remington 700 SPS line is quite affordable at a tad over $500, Kick in another $250-$300 for a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40 and your in business! The .308 is a good round, but if you're looking for a "do-all" rifle, the .30-06 might be a better choice for you, especially if you're interested in Moose.

Savage has also resurrected the Steven line of rifles. They're basically Savages, without the new Accutrigger system and they have a synthetic, rather than wood stock. Very good value for the money. They're retailing for about $320.00 and are available in both short and long action calibers. Again add a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope and you're in business for under $700!

Stay away from the Remington 7400 unless someone gives you one...then say thanks, sell it and put the money towards a new Model 700. They're known as the "jam-o-matic"...my gunsmith won't even work on 'em or sell them in his shop! That should tell you something!

I'd also suggest taking a look at the Remington SPS line. I bought one in .22-250 earlier this year and it shoots good for a $500 rifle. Like Jay and X-man says, the Bushnell 3200 3X9X40 seems to be a very popular scope for the budget minded. Any calibre from .270 up should work for both deer and moose if you use the proper ammo and can put your bullet where it counts. The new Stevens line seems to be popular too for guys without a lot of extra money to spend.

I was thinking of getting a semi because of less recoil and ability to have extra 2 shoots in. Or I better stay away from semi and go with bolt action? What will be the good, reliable rifle?

Caliber in either 270 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 308, 30-06, or 300 Mag, depending on your tolerance to recoil.

If you're going for all out economy hunting rifle, I'd get a Stevens 200 in 308 with a Weaver K4 fixed 4 power scope.

If you're hunting the east, I'd say a Remington 7600 (or 760, or 76, or 6) pump in 30-06 or .308 with a Bushnell Red Dot. The red dot has no magnification, so if you want to use optics to get up close, I can't advise you.

The 7400 is a good gun, and if you keep your chamber clean and stay away from hot loads, you should have no problem. If you're just getting it for rapid follow-up shots, a lever or pump is just as fast.

One that you can shoot comfortably, and not go deaf, or have the inside of your head rattled about from after a fews shots (ie Magnums)

Also from what I have seen the past few months...money dumped into a Rifle will not make you a better shot. Some of the best deer hunters in our area use such things as 1940 lever action Winchesters in .308, and Iron sights. I have also met many that use nothing but .303.

But then again most of these people teethed as babies on the wood, and later learned to walk holding these rifles.

Some of the new short Cartridges look promising, and many of our local hunters are having good results with them. So I guess it is what you are willing to play/pay/practice with.

J M - to answer your question (although there's been some good answers so far) it would be best if you told us what part of the country you'll be hunting in, what kind of animals you think you'll be hunting, and if you have much experience with firearms (like - have you shot a 303? what did you think of that recoil?)

A note about recoil - recoil is largely managable. A good fitting gun with a decent pad will not recoil much - whereas the same gun with a poor fit and a poor pad can beat the freakin' snot out of you. Pick a rifle that fits well.

Find a scoped, bubba'd No. 4 Lee-Enfield with good headspace. It's not necessarily the best, but it'll be relatively cheap.
Any rifle suitable for deer and moose will have moderately heavy felt recoil. Easy enough to tame. Your hunting coat will absorb a fair bit of it, a commercial butt stock(they're wider that the issue stocks are) and a recoil pad will help too.
Mind you, you have to decide how much money you want to spend after getting all the licences and permits.

With no info like method of hunting & type of terrian it's hard to give any accurate suggestions except personal favorites

Having said that, with lack of info my suggestion would be a Rem pump in 06 with a Elite 1.5-4 power scope! I see suggestions of 3-9 but if your in the thick of Ont bush that's just to much power! You can ALWAYS get away with to little magnification, you can never get away with too much

Interesting! - The 308 calibre was not invented until the mid 50's - I guess those west coast hunters were just ahead of their time... :D
