The best rifle and scope to hunt a deer, might a moose?

If he's in some of our Ont bush 3X is just to much for quick target aquasition.

what about one of the 2 - 7 offerings then? Nice mix of low and high power, good for closer in with enough reach out power to swat an animal at range if you have to comfortably?

Ya 2-7x would be a good choice, but I believe that a 3-4x is all you really need for the max point blank range of any 06 or comprable caliber! It's always easier to work with lower power than higher power :)

2X is low enough but 3X isn't :?
The objective is 40mm on the 3-9 rifleman and the obective on the 2-7 is 33mm... what does this mean? It means that the 3-9 on 3 power has more exit pupil than the 2-7 on 2 or 3 power. It will give transfer a greater amount of light to your eye... possibly making it faster... it certainly has no disadvantage in real hunting or practical terms :!:
If your gonna debate with me senior you should at least make an effort :p

3x40mm scope has an exit pupil of 13.3mm, much bigger than a human eye can use.

2x33mm scope has an exit pupil of 16.5mm, also much bigger than a human eye can use, and a bit bigger than that of the 3x40mm, so on lowest magnification power, the 2x-7x33mm scope is theoretically a bit brighter, but it is a moot point.
(Even if you use it on 3x, when it will have an exit pupil slightly smaller than the 3x40mm, it is still bigger than the 7mm maximum iris opening typical of a human eye. )

Field of view is the important number in my opinion.
The wider the field of view is at 100yds which is what they use to compare, the easier it is to acquire your animal in the scope espicially if it moving  & close up!

rifle

You can buy a good used M700 Rem or M70 Win. on gunnutz for $450.00-$550.00 and go to a 2x7 or my choice a 3x9x40 VXII leupold. You would then have a gun for a life time. ( 270,280,30-06,7MM mag. ect.

Marlin 336 or Win 94 in 30/30 'll get it done nicely. They'll only deer, even the big moosy ones. And, instead of breaking legs and busting guts with three hundred yard hail mary's, sneak up on them to within 100 yards or so, and don't concern yourself with scopes at 7 or 9 power, or trajectory. A nice little Weaver K4, if you just gotta have a scope. Don't want to overbalance the carbine, nor fool you into thinking that just because you can see it you can hit it. Maybe the guys who shoot and report on the Precision Rifle Forum can use a 9x on a hunting scope, but most of us could benefit from a bit more practice stalking, and less money on optics. My two cents.

300 yard shots may be hail marys for you and your 30-30 but for some people using these forums ,they are as much of a sure thing as your 100 yard shots. :)

I've read that some guy is using .22 rimfire rifle with Winchester Wildcat WW22LR amo to shoot a deer. It is true?

Not legal in most places in Canada (I hope)
Certainly isn't legal in Ontario.

On the scope issue, the cheaper or older scopes you will have to stay with low powers for brush shooting, I like the 1.5 X 4 myself.

On a visit to Bigredds, I was introduced to a Nice new Leupold 3 X 9 that I think has as much field of view as my older Leupold 1.5 X 4.

For the type of shooting you are doing, I'd look long and hard at the 308 for cartridge choice.

The guys here know I'm a lever gun guy, and if you are going to shoot out to 200 yards or a bit more, there are a few lever guns that can fill the bill. The Browning bLR, the Savage 99, The '86 Winchester, the Sako Finwolf, the 95 Winchester.

If Bolt guns are your thing, try them out. I personally hate the safety on Remingtons. Why? Because it doesn't (Unless it's changed) give the option of locking down the bolt.
I've had the rifle on a sling, and had the bolt open from rubbing on my coat, losing all the contents of the mag save one round before I noticed it.
I'd rather have a Winchester, Browning, Mauser, even a Savage.

When you do finally make a purchase, remember to use good ear protection while range shooting. Muffs and ear plugs together work well. Reflex [ flinch ] to recoil is a reaction caused 50% by sound. Reduce the sound of the blast and you'll realize the thump on the shoulder isn't so bad. .270 30-06, .308 the thump is about the same. They will all do the job admirably, if you do yours.

IMO,the best bang for your buck on a budget would have to be a Savage combo in a long action such as 270,30-06 or even a 7mm ,300mag as an option. All for under $600 at most stores.
Or you can go the NEF Handi rifle route in all calibers except the magnums and still have enough money to get a decent scope.
Good luck

Yeah, poachers and pricks that are not concerned with killing an animal quickly.

I've slaughtered sheep and big pigs with a .22 to the brain. Drops them dead in thier tracks. But it's BS to think that you can nail them in the brain every time in a hunting situation.

a good choice would be the savage weather worrier they go for around 600 and put a leupold VXII 3x9x40 on it and you have a very good hunting gun.... for about $1000.00
talk to ya all later
