i have been hankering for a nice little semi auto shotgun as im thinking about getting into 3 gun and the Benelli M4 is a little more then i want to invest in a semi auto shotgun.

i was thinking of picking up a made in Turkey shotgun and now that im looking i see that there are a couple different brands available to me.

I had initially thought of picking up a Hatsan Escort/Optima but now i see there is also a brand called Derya SPx2 that looks very very similar to the Hatsan.

Price difference between the 2 is like $27 so lets just go ahead and call them the same price.

Hatsan is as follows;

20" Barrel made of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel plus internal chrome plating
Black Matte Finish
Fixed Cylinder CHoke
Picatinny rail fitted on aircraft alloy receiver
3" chamber
Tactical / Semi-Automatic
Smart Valve Piston
Fast Loading System

Derya is as follows;

The Lion X2 Marine comes with a fiber optic front sight and windage / elevation adjustable rear Ghost Ring sight mounted to a Picatinny rail. Other features include a chrome lined barrel, ergonomic pistol grip, 4-position collapsible butt stock and included flash supressor / muzzle brake. Capacity is 4 +1. Chambered in 2 3/4"-3", It has a 14" barrel with adjustable sights. It measures : 33.5" with stock collapsed 37" with stock fully extended

anyone have any thoughts on a comparison between the two?

Bought the Hatsan MPA based on trying someone else's at the range.

Haven't had mine out shooting yet, but there were a few reasons that pushed me to get it:

Cycles everything, from light 2&3/4 target loads to 3" magnum slugs without missing a beat.

The sights are pretty interesting. Essentially a Ghost Ring sight, with a fibre optic front post, but the rear ghost ring also has two fibre optic dots at the 3 and 6 o'clock... This makes for wicked easy target acquisition for speed shooting, but also lets you be more precise if you need to be. Rear ghost ring is adjustable for windage and elevation, so you can easily dial it in for your own eyes.

S&J hardware makes a mag tube extension for it, (I have one on order) that makes for an interesting legal "more than 5 shots in a semi auto" capability. The mag it comes with can take FOUR 3" shells, and just shy of FIVE 2&3/4" shells. With the S&J extension, it will take FIVE 3" magnums (and just barely not 6) - which keeps everything on the safe side of Miramachi.

But then the fun starts... You can load SIX 2&3/4" shells (just shy of 7), plus one in the chamber, and ghost load one on the lifter, for 8 shells total. If you custom trim shells to 2&1/4" inches, you can load EIGHT of them in the tube, one in the chamber, and ghost load one on the lifter (keep the ghost loaded shell as a stock 2&3/4), and you've got a LEGAL 10 round semi-auto shotgun (the Benelli and Beretta semi auto crowds are doing the same thing). And everything will actually cycle reliably.

I'm not 100% sold on the stock that came with, but replacement stocks are available from Corwin-Arms, and I might go that route after running the one that came with it for a while.

Also, the MPA comes with a Pic rail on the receiver, so easy to mount a Red Dot down the road. and a short pic rail at the front of the fore-end, if I ever figure I need to mount a blinkin light or whatever at that end.

I haven't gotten around to shooting mine yet, but the one I did shoot was solid, reliable, and pretty fun.

Also... Kelly's online (forum sponsor) has them on for a helluva good price right now, at $359.00 - so even if it turns out to be a giant turd, at least it wasn't an expensive one.

Here's a pic of mine fresh out of the box next to my 1897 (1907 production, gunsmith restored - not a Norc Knockoff):

thanks for that grelmar!

i was in a LGS yesterday and was fondling the exact gun you have but in OD green.
felt really nice in the hand and was dry cycling real nice.
holy cow does that bolt slam home hard!
and thank you for the info on the mag extender, that was the only question i asked the LGS and of course they had no idea.

For me it would depend on where I was getting it from. I believe derya is one of the Turkish brands that are made the same as weatherby, Winchester, etc, so if it was a good shop who stands by their goods and won't jerk you around, if you like it, go for it.
If it was from somewhere with a less than stellar reputation, I would probably go for the hatsan since they are more of a "established" brand, and if you have problems there's more resources for parts, warranty work, etc.

Beyond that, I have a soft spot for the look of the hatsan's in OD green.

hey guys, thanks for all the input.
i ended up going with the Hatsan / Optima MP-A TS - Semi Automatic 12 Ga. Telestock from Kellys (ya cant beat $379 with free shipping!!!)
i liked the 5 year warranty as well.

i was telling my coworker about this deal and he picked one up as well.
i think ill have to stop talking about it or start asking for a commission from Kellys!

Now you just need to head over to S&J's website and pick up the "Canada Legal" + 2 mag extension.

Going to need to update the pic of mine pretty quick... Almost have it set up the way I want.

The Hatsans I've seen at our matches run fairly well. Some seem to have a necessary break-in period and can be very finicky when it comes to the amount of lube needed for reliable operation. Generally, wetter is better.

Personally, if unable to buy a ghost-load capable 3.5" gun I would have gone with a pump and large extension for max capacity.

yes, that mag extender is on my radar, will look at getting one here right away.
im assuming that we are unable to out hands on the Hatsan one up here?

If you're getting into 3 gun, why wouldn't you ghost load if you can? A 3" semi will be down at least 3 rounds to a properly set up pump, 4 if not ghost loaded, at MP3G matches, for example.
