Hi folks. I'm hoping that this post will help me clarify the internal battle that has been raging in my head the last little while.. Yes, the voices are speaking again.....:evil:
Considering the purchase of a new rifle, something in 5.56. Now the dilemma is as follows. Do I get an unrestricted, or restricted weapon.
Possible choices are the AR180B-2, HK SL8, Robinson XCR.


Benefits of unrestricted: I can hunt with it, use it on my own property for varmints, etc.

Benefits of restricted: Cool factor... cool factor..... :D


I feel I am missing a lot here, so please, feel free to expand on the benefits or drawbacks of each.

Rifle would be used for hunting paper mostly, but I do have acreage, so would use it for varmints, and hunting on my property as well. I want something reasonably accurate, obviously, and something that is fairly robust, and has a good source of after market parts, stocks, magazines etc. Also, do not want to break the bank.

Your comments and suggestions are welcomed. :D

I've had my AR15 for over a year now, but, I can say that if the XCR was available in better quantity and it wasn't a first rev release, I would have opted for it over the AR just to avoid the black rifle/restricted bull####.
 
OK, but what if I want to use this rifle outside of the range? Then, I can't use an AR-15. right???

So, my dilemma becomes, do I get something for the range only, or something I can use elsewhere.??
 
I say get the non restricted. I love my Beretta Storm and my SA Black Special. I can plink anywhere its legal to discharge firearms. The only problem I see may be the price of them, but a non restricted Storm in 9mm or .40 runs around 1500, which is much cheaper than the Swissy. I got some funny looks from hunters etc while I was hiking to a secluded practice spot in NE BC with my Storm slung up. It all depends on how 'black' you want it to look....there are WAY more accessories for AR's....but a good optic and a nice clean rifle are uber fun regardless. (and the Storms can hold 10 rounds!)

The fact that you're in this dilemma says you WANT an AR! I can think of lots of lighter rifles to lug around your property shooting groundhogs.

Get an AR for the range, and enjoy it while you still can.

My opinion.

While the AR15 DOES entice me, so does the ability to use a rifle for more than paper... Although, I do have the 30.30 that would be good enough for the coyotes, skunks and porcupines.. And the 10.22 for the gophers and such.

This is NOT getting easier!!

So, of the non-restricted, which would be your pick?

Of restricted, would the AR15 be "the" thing to go for?
 
Do you already have a rifle for your acreage hunting needs? If so then why not go for the cool factor and use your AR at the range if that's what you want.

If not get the non-restricted. For my purposes a restricted rifle is about as useless as tits on a bull and the Swiss Arms would be my first choice despite the cost.
 
For unrestricted I'd go with the 180B. You can pimp it out like an AR15, it's as accurate as you want to make it and you can take it anywhere.

easy on the restricted firearms. You know how the government is....they might take em away from us...Grrrr.....A un-restricted would be better theres a bunch of rifles out there that arent restricted and are as fun a the AR...I think...lol...but do you already have a restricted rifle?
 
That's fine and dandy GT if all you are going to do is take it to the range. Plink expressed an interest in hunting critters as well. The 180B fits the bill on both counts. Is a 2-3 grand rifle worth just a few range trips a year?

Sure, buy as many restricteds as you want, I have. But some of my restricteds see very little range time. My 180B sees all the action off the range.

That's exactly why you should own as many restricteds as possible, the more there are in private hands, the more difficult it will be for the government to organize some kind of mass confiscation. To the starter of this post, get an AR-15 while you still can, it barely got through the last round of prohibitions a few years back.
 
Interesting points of view. While I agree that perhaps it is a good idea to get restricted weapons in the hands of citizens if they want them, while it's still possible, I still am not sure that my CURRENT situation warrants one. I do NOT have a restricted yet. As a matter of fact, if I decided to go restricted today, I'd have to go challenge the test and get my restricted classification.


Not that I don't plan on doing this in the next month or two anyways, as I think this is probably a good idea before they make a restricted license all but impossible to obtain. :rolleyes: :bsFlag:

Perhaps the 180B2 is the way to go for my CURRENT situation, and in the meantime, I can get my restricted classification and then pick up the AR later this year. I have a hard time justifying 2K on an AR and parts when all I'll be able to do with it is the 100 yard paper hunt at the range.

I'm still up in the air on this one..... Hmmm...

Any owners of the 180B2 care to comment on the rifle? I'm sure this has been beat to death on the forums by other users, so if you wish to PM me with your views on the rifle, that would be cool as well.

My $0.02.

Go challenge your restricted PAL, or take the course, your call. But GET YOUR RPAL.

Then buy a stripped AR15 lower.

Then buy your choice of non-restricted 223 for hunting.

This advice from a guy who bought beer instead of a $200 FN FAL 1A1 back in 92, and now can't privately own an FN at all. :(
 
if you get a non restricted, and wait a 6 months, then maybe you wont be allowed to get a restricted.

if you get a restricted now, and wait 6 months to get a non restricted then you can!

I would say time it with the iffy guns first, and then stock up on the other stuff
 
OK, now that's an interesting take on it.

DEFINITELY challenging the RPal in the next few weeks. More a matter of me being able to find the time to do it than anything else. So, if I get the lower, I can simple "build" my AR? Is that what you are referring to?

Never fired an FN FAL 1A1, I used the FN C1 when I served back in the 80's. Twas a WONDERFUL rifle. 8 inch groups at 500 yards on iron sights.. Loved it.
