The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

I made a trade for one this morning. It's been on my want list for a long time. I think I will top it with a fixed 4x scope. It should make a great bush gun.

The US version has a barrel length of what 16.75 inches?
The CDN 18.5" barrel makes more sence to me
I'd like to see a 20-22" barrel though

Over-all I suppose that "I DON'T GET IT".

A scout rifle is supposed to be lightweight.
Really lightweight
6lbs or less is ideal
This rife is 7lbs empty and without a scope

The LER scope rail prohibits most scopes being mounted on the receiver due to objective size. You should be safe with 33mm.

The AI mag gets in the way.

For $1000 I'll build my own

Ummm....Where did you hear that? The original Steyr Scout isnt even that light...

General Specifications for the Steyr Scout SBS 96 L

Got mine today. This gun has scope rings that came with it, if you dont want to use the picatanny rail, then remove the rear ghost site and you can put your scope in the traditional place.

The Scope Rings.

I think this rifle probably answers the question of which rifle to arm the Canadian Rangers with, provided it was proven to be rugged enough, and the company was willing to provide the support necessary and the features necessary (such as the addition of a stripper notch) to make it appropriate for military service. But why apply common sense to a problem?

I'll be interested to see if there are any issues that come up over time concerning the magazine retaining system, and to hear what guys think of the stock design. As for me, I'm not about to retire my '06 for a .308, not even a cool one.

Anyone have problems with the fit of the steel mags? Mine is really loose. I've fired 60 rounds through it. feeds and functions fine but there is some ware on the front of the mag where it contact the receiver. i think from the loose fit of the mag and the recoil from firing the mag slams against the receiver and causes the ware. anyone else have this problem? or is something wrong with my gun. i really wish they had gone with a roll in style mag like the mini-14. besides that i love the gun.

Picked it up at 10:00am sharp... I'm going to have a lot of fun with this rifle, watch out Mr. Caribou!!!!

I just want to say thanks to Barret at Arma-Coat for doing a great job on the black Nitron coating and excellent all around service.

on another note. has anyone got the xs site full length rail? I wanted to mount a traditional style scope on mine but want to have the peep stay on for back up. anyone in canada sell these yet? thanks

x2 , on Gun talk TV they did a thing on the scout and mentioned a company that made them

Any one know where to find the nc star iluminated long eye relief scope for sale in Canada. That looks like it might be an economical option to give the scout scope a try. Thanks in advance.

So out of the box how is this gun range wise? I havnt shot mine yet, just wondering what adjustments you guys needed to make at your first range visit. In other words is the gun set out of the box for 100 yards?

Mine was (well not the scope - lol, that took sighting in).

The iron XS sights are beautiful, almost makes me want to take the scope off.

I've seen a few Ruger scouts that have scopes mounted back towards the stock more, here are other options for mounting your scope rearward to regular eye relief distances. There are inexpensive ones from NCStar (for about $30-$40) all the way up to $200-$300 ones for alot of higher end rifles.

I am looking around for one of these 'Cantilever Scope Mounts' - This is the Scout with a LaRue or American Defense mount:

i guess we could get them from the states. but, do any canadian dealers carry them? looks to be higher than stock Ruger rail. I wanted to put a scope with 40mm objective. but don't want to use a cheek riser. anyone try a 40mm scope on the xs rail? is it too high?

thanks coho. might be the way I go. I'm still thinking about the XS sight full rail. they go for $90 down south plus another $50 for some decent rings. anyone try the XS rail? happy with it? I want to get this rifle set up before hunting season. I've got an elite 4200 2.5-10x 40. I want to mount it as low as possible and still keep the peep on for backup.

My son put the Leupold 2.5 mid eye relief on his. He likes it, he says he can sight on the target with both eyes open and see the crosshairs clearly as well as see the landscape around the target.
