Another year's hunting is done for me, and the GSR functioned flawlessly again. A couple of things about it after 5 years of having it in the field:
- It's heavy to lug around for hours on end. The synthetic stock may be in the future for me.
- The matte stainless steel scratches very easily which is fairly annoying, so this gun has graduated to being a tool-gun while my Ruger African will be the pretty gun.
- I do prefer the traditional scope position to the scout mount in terms of balance and use. Having had both, in the country I hunt in, I prefer the traditional scope for the longer shots. Although, having the traditional mount makes having the front sight useless, and having the front sight makes taping the muzzle a fraction more tedious on cold winter mornings.
- The 18.7" barrel makes it such a great gun to carry through the thick woods, whether it's slung on my shoulder or carried at the ready position.
- With the short barrel, it makes a very impressive announcement when you pull the trigger.
- I wish the trigger was a bit lighter, but not enough to make me want to spend the money on a Timney.
