The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

I might have one for you soon. I'm looking to go to a traditional scope setup on mine now.

Side note: The OEM ruger rings these came with are 1", correct?

Another side note: I'm also thinking of going to a synthetic stock so I can paint it. If anyone wants to trade for a laminate, hit me up! Otherwise, where would I be able to find one?

You one order one from snapshotsguns.com who are the Ruger agent in Canada. You will require the Ruger part number which is 90574, you can check it on the Ruger site if you go to Store and the Scout comes with one inch rings as standard

Another year's hunting is done for me, and the GSR functioned flawlessly again. A couple of things about it after 5 years of having it in the field:
- It's heavy to lug around for hours on end. The synthetic stock may be in the future for me.

- The matte stainless steel scratches very easily which is fairly annoying, so this gun has graduated to being a tool-gun while my Ruger African will be the pretty gun.

- I do prefer the traditional scope position to the scout mount in terms of balance and use. Having had both, in the country I hunt in, I prefer the traditional scope for the longer shots. Although, having the traditional mount makes having the front sight useless, and having the front sight makes taping the muzzle a fraction more tedious on cold winter mornings.

- The 18.7" barrel makes it such a great gun to carry through the thick woods, whether it's slung on my shoulder or carried at the ready position.

- With the short barrel, it makes a very impressive announcement when you pull the trigger.

- I wish the trigger was a bit lighter, but not enough to make me want to spend the money on a Timney.

I have a synthetic stock non stainless model with a Trijicon Accupower 3-9x40mm scope conventionally mounted and I have removed the scope rail. The rifle weighs 7.7 lbs with a three round synthetic mag. I had a Ruger Frontier ten years ago and I found that the forward mounted 2.5 power scope did not work very well when looking into the tree line to spot moose

What did you use to plug the holes left by the rail? I just swapped to a synthetic stock and conventional scope setup this week, but now there are holes left where the rail was that I need to plug.

I believe I got mine from Gregg Distributors, but Ruger sells some themselves.

I’ve only been able to find the Ruger ones stateside and they don’t want to ship. I’m checking Greggs online but they seem to have everything but

It's possible mine were a special order. I had a friend who deals with them regularly source mine and just bought him a beer afterwards. Try calling Clay at Prophet River, he has a good relationship with suppliers in the US and could probably get you some.

I can buy a bag of 100 from Fastenal for like, $15, but it sounds like they're stainless.

Edit- Never mind, they are black oxide. I will have a bag of 100 of those here next week. If anyone removes their front rail and needs to plug the holes, hit me up haha

I ordered then from Snap Shots who are the Ruger Agent for Canada

There email address is: snapshots@videotron.ca

You need to order M77-GSPA SCOUT BARREL PLUG SCREW KIT which is Ruger part number 90376 and give them your name and address to send them to along with a credit card number. The total cost of the parts was $7.50 plus $8.00 shipping plus tax for a total of $16.28

There phone number is 450 427 0052 and they are very straight forward to deal with and quick to ship since they seem to have them in stock.

I ended up ordering a bag of 100 of them from Fastenal for about that same price; they'll be here Wednesday. In the meantime, I swapped my stock, scope, and rings, and hit it with a splash of paint to shake things up.

Got the new scope dialed in this weekend, and rang steel out to 500 yards with cheap surplus ammo. This rifle really impressed me, and the guys I was shooting with!
