The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Thanks, trying to figure out if I want to try and make mine a bit lighter. Removing the rail is something I'll almost certainly do as it's cheap and I have my scope mounted traditionally so no need for the rail.

Hello all,

I have one question that i think should find its answer here:

Are Ruger Gunsite Scouts, with black composite stock, blue finish rare?
I can't see too many of them around...
Eric

I recently put mine in a synthetic stock and I was very impressed. It is much lighter an it seems to fit the rifle better than the old laminate one did. I had to adjust my scope for a shift in POI and then I was able to shoot a 1" group at 200 yards (with a 2.5x scout scope).

My Ruger GSR .223 arrived today. Just curious to see if anyone is using the Burris RT-6 1-6X24 Fastfire III PEPR Combo? I'm really leaning towards this set up. Cheers.

I'm interested in having both the peep sight in tact and having a conventionally mounted scope. Is the XS Rail the only option? It runs out over the barrel and just seems like it would be extra weight

Thanks!

I see alot of people post about how smooth their scouts are. I'm curious about it because mine is anything but smooth! This thing binds up like crazy when I rack the bolt with any speed or any way in which I break the movement into 2 movements.

It cycles smooth as hell if I consciously lift, pull straight back, push straight forward, then down. As soon as you apply the slightest torque pressure to it, especially when pushing forward (pretty much have to support the whole bolt throw to get it to smooth).

Is this typical and it's just a quirk of the rifle I'll have to train myself to deal with? Or does it get better with use? My rifle is used, and have no idea of round count or use, but it kinda gets annoying that it doesn't seem to cycle well for me.

My experience with my rifle is that cycling the bolt needs to be taken in two distinct movements - rotating the bolt and sliding the bolt. If you try and do it all at once and start getting some angular motion in there, the bolt is a loose enough fit that it starts to bind as the angles start to add up in the rear part of the bolt housing. It is 'smooth' enough that once you open the bolt, you can turn the rifle on its buttstock and the bolt will slide completely open with zero resistance and there is zero graininess in the action. It just requires two distinct motions - there's no competing in the Enfield Mad Minute.

It's a Mauser thing, like Ratfink points out, and like you noticed yourself Potshot, the bolt handle needs to unlock with a vertical movement, then pull horizontally to the rear, then back forward horizontally and then vertically down to lock up.
All linear actions, no short cuts or diagonal motion and a nice loose wrist throughout.

I don't really grab the knob of the bolt either but cup it in the meat of my palm during cycling.

It's a technique that once learned is easy and works with any bolt action rifle regardless of how "smooth" it might be.... :)

Thanks Ratfink and Can-down, I'm relatively new to wonderful world of mauser style actions and your assessment seems spot on. As you have said, cupping the bolt handle with the palm and working the action as you described definitely makes this rifle run well. Just means more range time and training for me until I get the motions engrained into my muscle memory.

Love the rifle though, nice and light, short and maneuverable, seems like an excellent companion for hunting season in the relatively thick bush I hunt in.

I have an XS Rail coming for it so I can try an optic on it, but I think I will still prefer the irons for the thick brush. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks again!

Has anyone upgraded their GSR front blade sight? Or changed it out entirely?

I find mine quite thick and cumbersome for hunting purposes, (past 100yds), and in lower light when I take a lot of my hunting shots. I would like to either modify mine or replace it, if there exists a better option. I was thinking of trying to attach a small silver ball. Maybe .020-.030" if I can find something like that, if there isn't any other option to put on better one.

I know I could just put a scope on it, but I choose to shoot irons with this rifle because I find it makes me be a better stalker and hunter.

Does anyone run the HI-LUX OPTICS SCOUT SCOPE 2-7X 32 on there ruger? I currently have a vortex but saw someone at the range have one tried to look up reviews but couldn't find much the few i did find were in the consensus of ok. I do like the BDC reticle on it. Any thoughts or experience
Thanks

I have a hi-lux scout without the BDC that I removed and replaced for a more traditional scope. I found that I wasn't loving the smaller field of view of the scope and was hunting in areas where I had it cranked up to 7x most of the time so I preferred the traditional scope mount more.

I just bought a new GSR 308 stainless laminate.
I am looking to buy the radial brake from the synthetic rifle to replace the bird cage. Anybody know where to find one?
Brownells don’t have it and they cannot order one.

I really like this rifle. At first the bolt was rough but after 150 round it became significantly smoother!

So i just got my Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle - it Came with a NEW in box Vortex Crossfire 2-7 Scout scope BUT i'm thinking of a RED Dot site of some sort ? Burris or Vortex OR ? Aimpoint ? This rifle will just be used for short range hunting and Bear defence ! Might be in very ####ty weather and rough usage so it needs to TUFF ! What's your Guys Opinions on using one and What brands you like ? RJ

I tried trijicon MRO and Eotech exps 2 on mine.
I preferred the larger glass of the Eotech.

After a week of hard hunting & hiking through thick brush I can say that the GSR is a fantastic carry gun. I started the week off with my African in 6.5x55 and it just kept getting hung up on every branch with its 24" barrel (even with the sling on the barrel band to carry it lower), and then as the snow started to fly I changed to the GSR and the lighter weight and smaller dimensions made it a real pleasure to carry. Now, to add some traction to my damn sling so it doesn't fall off my shoulder as easily!
