The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Just finished up some DIY paint on the Ruger Scout, turned out pretty decent. Posted an expanded thread on it showing step by step in the Hunting and Sporting Arms Forum.

Look REAL Good ! Nice JOB ! RJ

Anyone else using Norinco .308 through their scouts? Noticing the bolt gets very sticky after a couple rounds of the stuff, looking for another option as far as lower cost .308, any ideas?

Recently purchased a Gunsite Scout in 450 Bushmaster on the EE, first thing I did was remove the muzzle brake and replace it with the supplied thread protector, took it out for a test today, very pleased, I don't mind the recoil at all and was very pleased with the aperture sight after I applied some white nail polish to the front post. I also went for a hike with it, what a pleasure to carry.

Nice setup! Where did you get the Warnes medium height QD ring here in Canada? I have the same Ruger and I'm looking to forward mount a Crossfire II scout scope on the picatinny rail and I can't seem to find 1 inch/picatinny compatible mounts anywhere at the moment. If you (or anyone reading this) have a link, I would be grateful. Cheers

That youngster has some awesome looking gear todbartell. Way to make it fun! I remember starting to hunt in running shoes, jeans and cotton shirts. Always wet and cold. It is great to see kids properly kitted out these days. Early familiarity with a scout rifle has got to do some good as well.

Ok not a true Scout Rifle but this is a 16" barrel 308win Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact with a Ruger GSR stock and PT&G bottom metal. I love this Compact for carry in the bush during hunting season but I also like the Ruger GSR Scout. I considered getting a GSR but thought that it was a bit clunky for what I wanted, I don't need the forward mounted rail and thicker barrel that does with it. I do like iron sights on my rifles but GSR rear sight has to come off anyway for the scope to be where I want it back on the receiver. Any way managed to get the stock here on CGN, ordered the bottom metal from PT&G (no problem shipping as long as there isn't a mag with it), and got the mag from another CGN member here in Calgary.

There was a bit of fitting, mostly to the AICS mag but I think I've got it sorted out. I haven't got a GSR to compare it to but I suspect the receiver on the GSR might be a little different than the Hawkeye hence the fitting. There was no way the mag would seat and feed without trimming it a bit at the front and rear corners. It is feeding and ejecting dummy rounds now but I still need to go try it out with some live ammo.

Scope is a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x but I might change it out to the Leupold Mk4 2.5-8x MRT with illuminated mildot reticle that is on my AR15 (seeing as how I can't ####ing use that any more!).

With the one spacer the length of pull is the same as the original Compact stock. The forend was made for a thicker barrel so it is nicely free floated, it is also longer than the forend on the Compact stock but I think I like the extra length because it gives me more to hang onto.

Lipsey's exclusive scout rifle

Here is my Ruger 308 scout, just received it a few days ago. Its the 16.5 inch lipseys model that I added metal trigger guard to and got rid of all that cheap plastic inside.

Whats the deal, it took me calling most of the gun stores across the country to find the SS model with 16.1" barrel. It very well might have been the last one available in the country. Did they all sell out after the ban? One shop told me they were discontinued, but I took it as being the usual BS gun shop gossip.

I had to order mine from new Brunswick. Everywhere seems sold out. I think this thing is going to need a real target scope after today. Just with my 2-7x with bipod and no rear rest at 100m.
