The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Potshot nicely done!

Did you carry it around this hunting season? How did the paint hold up?

Also, could you snap a picture from the top view. How does it look without the rail? Did you do anything to hid the screw holes?

A little later than I said it would be, but here is a picture from the top looking down. I didn't put anything in the empty screw holes for this season, I'm thinking of putting on an XS sight rail to conventionally mount an optic as opposed to the whole scout setup. Paint held up well, no noticeable damage to the finish after bailing into the alders and hazelbrush a few times.

Thanks for the picture. Better later then never.

I’ll have to look into what people are using to fill those holes.

I’d like to remove the rail system and just run a conventional scope on it.

A few years ago I took the rail off and started searching for plug screws. Ruger wouldn't ship them, nor would anyone else in the U.S. I think it was because of the Itar regs.
So I eventually found some socket head screws of the correct thread and cut them to the proper length with a dremel tool.
Unfortunately it's been so long that I don't remember the thread pitch and I don't have the rifle with me to check. Not much help I know, sorry, but the picture lets you see what they look like installed.

I tried posting the picture instead of the link but I'm on a phone that doesn't like me.

I've been getting some really nice groups with the stock Ruger aperture sights, but have always been curious how much the groups would shrink with a good scope on it! I know I'm not the best shot with iron sights, but this thing makes it seem easy. Easily one of my favourite rifles for hunting with.

I think it’s a great shooter. Iron sights are spot on once you get their position on target figured out.

My first year hunting I ran a fixed power scout scope (leupold I think it was) but found I didn’t feel comfortable taking an animal past 100 with it. That winter I picked up a Burris scout scope and took my first deer at 325 (Wouldn’t do that again) with it. I’m looking to run something in the 10-12ish power range for that extra distance (under 500m) if needed. I want to find the perfect balance though of useful magnification for the rifle while also keeping it somewhat compact to pack around.

The Canadian agent for all warranty repairs and parts is snapshots@videotron.ca phone # 450-427-0052. I have found them very good deal with, and I ordered the plug screws for Ruger GSR rail with no problem getting them. I recommended them to my Buddy when he wanted the same plus a thread protector for the barrel. I also know of someone else who got a synthetic stock for the Ruger GSR through them.

so finally i put my hand on one in left handed.

i have a few questions:

burris scout scope how do you like the 2.75x20?
how do you make mdt mag works (for a 308)?

thanks a lot.

mine is a dark laminate with the long barrel.

I've got the Burris 2.75 and the Leupold 2.5 and prefer the Burris. It's more compact and I just like it better. It's just personal preference. Some guys like the Leupold better.

A couple of Vortex Viper PST II 1-6 illuminated red dot scopes showed up. One for my 6.5 Grendel stalking rifle and one for the GSR.

Installed one on the Ruger using Warne QD rings but they are too high for my liking. Gives more of a chin weld than a cheek weld. I considered using some sort of strap on cheek pad but I really hate putting stuff like that or buttstock shell holders on a stock so I dug around in my rings box grabbed some low 30mm rings and tried them out. At first I thought there wouldn't be enough room to get my big paws on the bolt handle and operate it properly but as I usually operate a hunting rifle bolt with the palm of my hand rather than fingers they seemed to work okay. Only shot about 30 rounds with these rings today so more experimentation is required. If they work out well I'll invest in some better quality rings of a similar height and use them.
