The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Poweredward - did you get your scout from Arma-Coat as well? Picked mine up this week from Barret at Arma-Coat and I'm loving it so far. For those of you with the stainless looking to go black, check'em out!

yes I got it from Arma coat as well, Very very impressed with the coating, well worth the 200 $ I couldn't see me owning one any other way

Anybody have word on where to buy steel 5 & 10 round mags for this gun? Still stuck with the one factory mag and I really want a spare. The polymer do nothing for me, I prefer the steel in this case.

I am planning a cool mod, need to make a new stock and do some mill work on it to make it possibe though...

You should try these Alpha Industries Ruger GSR 10-shot mags. Double stack, alot shorter and lighter. I like them 1000x better than the OEM steel or plastic ones.

Neat. Not heard of them before.

How tight do they sit in the mag? With the aftermarket plastic ones I was having problems with a few of the mags of the spring being loose enough that when cycling the bolt the cartridge would jump ahead of the bolt face and jam the gun, as it is a controlled feed action and will not feed properly unless seated firmly in the mag.

Nice looking set up you have there. I'm looking to do something along those lines.
What kind of scope and rings do you have on your rifle? Does the rear iron sight interfere at all with your scope usage since it is so low?

I saw some pictures of someone using Leupold QRW rings in medium height on his scope and people were commenting on how it was too high - but it got the scope above the iron sights. Do low ones require the removal of the rear sight?

Those are Leupold QRW low rings with their scout scope in gunmetal grey. The iron sights don't interfere with the scope at all for me. (the scope DOES block the use of the iron sights, hence the QRW if you want to quickly remove the scope)

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for! I was afraid of the rear iron sight coming halfway up the scope and getting in the way with the low QRW rings.

Next question: Does anyone have any experience with the Hi-Lux Leatherwood Optics LER27x32 scope? The price is about all I can afford and I love the zoom feature on it. I've read some pretty good reviews and haven't heard anything negative, but of course, these are magazine reviews...

Ok...so I have been looking at this rifle since it first came out, but learned the hard way to give new products a time to adjust and let the company tweak any problems. I am looking at keeping this as an iron sight rifle. Not going to burden with lights, coffee holder, magpul whatevers etc. This would/will be a truck gun+hunter. So let's hear some HONEST (pro+con) reviews...

What's a Canadian response/review of this rifle? I have read the bolt is sticky...does this smooth out, or is it better right from the factory? Does it cycle all ammo? Weight? New magazines from poly to steel, are there enough aftermarket to satisfy? Durability? Are the iron sights good from the box?

Anything I forgot, feel free to add.

Thanks gang

My observations: The sticky bolt -Mine was never sticky or had a tendency to bind as some have reported. Maybe it's an issue that's been resolved or maybe it was only a problem experienced by some guys but I have no complaints in that regard. When new, yes, it was somewhat rough, but it's definitely getting smoother with use.

Ammo: I have put over 200 rounds through it so far, using 150 & 180gr factory ammo, as well as various handloads with bullets weighing from 100gr to 180 gr, with a variety of spitzers, round nose and flat points.
I haven't had any failures to feed or extract. So far it's been flawless.

Weight: with the factory sights I don't find it heavy at all, but it's not a featherweight either. I haven't put a scope on mine yet, but think it would be a bit heavy once a scope & rings are added, depending of course on the size of scope.

Mags: I don't much like the steel 10 rd that it comes with. It's a very sloppy/loose fit. But not once did it fail to feed. It functioned perfectly, every time.
I like the poly mags. They're light, reasonably priced and fit nice and snug in the mag well with no play or issues. They can also be top loaded while seated.

Sights: I love the sights. It's one reason I bought this rifle. I wanted a rifle with simple, rugged and durable sights and this rifle has them. I would have preferred a rear that adjusts easier, such as a Garand type sight, but these do the job. Once it's sighted in with your chosen load, you're good to go, no reason to be making adjustments. But if you like to change ammo constantly, it's somewhat of a pain to adjust.

I'm still in the learning phase as far as loads and accuracy are concerned, but I'm happy with it overall. It's tough to know how capable it is accuracy wise using the irons as my eyes aren't what they used to be, but I really like it set up this way as it's just so nice and handy. When shouldering it, the sights line right up without having to hunt for them.
At some point I'm going to scope it just to get a real world idea as to it's accuracy potential.

It's a shooter and hunter, not a target rifle. It's a whole lotta fun and I couldn't be happier with it. While there's nothing perfect in this world, this rifle comes close for me and I can honestly say I have zero regrets since buying it. I wanted a short barreled .308 with a receiver sight, in stainless, and that's exactly what I got.
Will you like it? Only you can say.

Can anyone tell me if you are able to order a mag from Alpha Industries directly into Canada, or if any place in Canada stocks them?

Nope, I have tried a few times, they won't ship outside the USA. I have not looked very hard at another inbetween company, but I bet there are a few out there. Your other option is to ship them to the border and bring them back with you if you know how to do it paperwork wise.

Has anyone looked at the Ruger site lately and seen that the Americans can now buy the 18" stainless barrel... but with a flash suppressor? It looks pretty awful... Everything really needs to be one colour.
