The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Neat rifles Boomer, and a nice Winchester especially.

The Ching Sling and Safari Ching Sling are similar but not the same. The original Ching Sling required a swivel ahead of the magazine to attach the second strap, where as the second strap is part of the Safari Ching Sling which requires only a front a rear swivel.

Frankly I'm sold on them . . .

I have run some 150's, 165's and 168's in mine so far (no 147's or 170+ yet) and so far - the 168 gains are my favorites. I did some reading and they say the twist (1:10) in the scout was designed to run 168-180grains per Mil-spec issued .308 rounds.

Do you handload 168s or have you found any commercial loads?

Mine are handloads - BUT... I can buy cheapo mil surplus and they shoot GREAT and consistent out of my rifle. It really is a great gun despite what people say (mostly Sako/Rem 700/Tikka elitists - haha)

What's the average Canadian price on them now? Does anyone know who imports them or who is taking backorders at this time.

Contact Arma-Coat - they're a forum sponsor and they do take backorders. The going rate is $899+tax which is lucky since the US prices seem to have been jacked to well over $1k.

Good to know on the ammo. I have some 180gr federal blue that I bought for a day at the range a couple months ago so I guess we'll see how they fly when my rifle arrives in the next little while. Then I guess I'll take a look and see what's out there to buy in and around the 165gr mark.

I just received my GSR.

Thoughts on opening the box:
Everything is TIGHT! Putting the magazine in the well, cycling the action - it's all very tight. I cycled the action with some muscle behind it about 100 times tonight and it's smoothed out quite a lot, but based on what I've read, this is normal. The bolt still hangs up a bit on the ring that holds the claw to the rest of the bolt in and around the area of the action where the ejector/back edge of the mag well is. I don't think it's anything major, but it's something I'll monitor for wear.
The magazine will only fit 9 rounds. It's just too darn tight for a 10th round! Unless my technique is flawed, I just could not push the 9 down enough to get the 10th one in.

It's greasy as hell! Do you guys recommend completely stripping the bolt down, and cleaning it out? It seems to be oozing oil out of every crevasse.

My brother got one on boxing day - left handed that had been around for awhile. His has the gunsite logo on the bottom of the pistol grip and mine does not - can anyone elaborate on when those were available? Small point, I know - but I think it's a cool point.
Compared to my brother's, this rifle is way tighter. His magazine jiggles in the well a lot more and his bolt cycles more smoothly/loosely. His magazine will also hold 10 rounds compared to mine. My safety has 3 distinct notches, where his only really has two - full on, and full off.

These are just some brief thoughts on unboxing my rifle. Kind of interesting to note the differences between the two rifles, considering they both came from the same factory.

A Ruger safety that has only 2 positions is possibly defective. It should have 3 positions and if it's lacking one, that may be a warning sign.

I guess I said that wrong. It has a first setting of the safety that does lock out the trigger, but it does not snap into position very easily. It requires a conscious effort to get it into that position, where mine is very obvious and effortless when switching between. Apparently his will also cycle into the fire position by cycling the action when it is in the first position safety.

I'll talk with him tomorrow and maybe he will have to send it back to Ruger for some work.

Huh, what brand mags did yours come with. The steel AI mags tend to accept somewhere around 12 rounds, but maybe yours have fresh springs.
I would take a very close look at the safety that only has 2 spots, might be a sign of some problems. I don't want to hear of any hunting or range accidents.
As for yours not easily changing selections on the safety, my only idea is maybe some grit or debris got in there and is jamming it up. Or a burr or something. Have you stripped the rifle and given it a good cleaning?

If it flips from safe to fire by working the action, there is definitely a problem.

Could someone post a picture of about the first 2" of their bolt from the top and bottom? Mine is acquiring wear marks that my brother's bolt doesn't have and I also have a small indent on one of my locking lugs that he doesn't have.

What is that bottom rifle - custom???

For those of you running optics, did you try both the scout mount and the regular mount? Which one do you prefer? Do you regret going one way or the other?
I'm looking at outfitting mine with optics in the near future.

Yes, tried both. Went with the scout configuration mainly because that's the whole idea of the theme of a "scout rifle". Worked well enough for a 246 yard in under 2 seconds offhand kill shot on a nice buck last fall, so I don't regret it at all.

I've been scouring local shops and websites to try and find one in stock, anybody know of anywhere that has one in stock?

Any more range reports from some happy (or unhappy) owners?

Is anyone running Leupold QRW rings on their scout mount? Which height are you running? The scope I want to use has a 1.53" objective lens on it and a 1" tube with a 1.38" ocular lens.
