The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

That is a very nice looking mag, RRCo. Now that I've finally gotten a response on my refund request for my stealth-pinned 10-round plastic mags (no refund or replacement), I removed the rivet and loaded them up yesterday. They are quite nice in general, but they are actually 9-rounders. This is a well-known problem with them, it seems; if you cram the last round in it pushes the lips apart. The dustcover won't seat and I didn't even try to put them in the rifle, I'm sure it won't feed correctly.

And they have a slightly shorter OAL permitted than the metal AIA mag, from what I understand. The increased OAL on this type 2 might be nice at some point in the future, if I decide to start hand-loading. Which does look like it could be in my future; I really like shooting this rifle.

Yea the mags on these rifles are the down side for sure. I just ordered a few plastic ones from brownelles in various sizes (mostly for a weight reduction) When i get them and they function ok for me ill be selling the steel ones.

Since it's discussion thread so I would share my two cents about this rifle.

-It's not lightweight, a bit on heavy side compare to other hunting rifle in this caliber.
-Yes, magazines would get in the way. I recommend buy 5 rounds magazines.
-Accuracy is so so, nothing much to brag about. I got 2 moa with Hornady A-max 168 grain. Probably better with hand load but never got time to work out the load yet.
-Mounting an optic is quite challenge if you want to keep the rear sight. XS rail is what I choose.
-Ruger should have gave two rings set in this package, 30mm and 1 inch diameter ring. Give option to other people with different optic.
-Ruger should have include two magazines, 5 rounder and 10 rounder consider how much the whole thing cost. Yes, I would say that it's an expensive rifle.

Anyway those are just my two cents.

Edit : mine is American version but my point still stand.

Time for photo ops.

I agree that a 5 round mag shoul dcome standard with these..... I purchased a 3 round polymer for this reason.... This is a hunting rifle for me for stalking deer and close quarter shots so having 11 shots is not exactly needed or wanted here.... As for th esingle stack config I love it.... very simple and reliable design....

These next two photos show the two different magazines installed in the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. It is hard to dispute that the Alpha Industries magazine has a sleeker more compact look than the original magazine that comes with the rifle.
Not only that, but it's a lot more heavily ribbed and therefore a lot more rigid, resistant to dents etc.

Just a heads up for anyone looking for the thread size of the picatinny rail screws. They are 6-40.
Apologies if it's been posted before.

I saw some 5 round mags on the shelf at Wholesale Sports in Calgary last week.

What I would really like is a 3 round mag or two for hunting... can't find them anywhere...

Thanks Bro:
The Wholesale Sports in Nanaimo only shows the 10 rnd steel mags.
I found 3 & 5 rnd at IRUN GUNS web at $30 ea. but then they wanted another $25
to ship to Canada plus tx.
Do you recall the price in Calgary?

Made my own three round mag out of a ten rnd'er. After two days of hiking with it i needed something smaller. The finish on these is pretty weak though, wish it wasnt coated and was a plain stainless finish. Heres mine, points and handles great for off hand shots.

I just cut along the first rib and filed it down to the thickness of the little lip that holds the floorplate on. Then i just filed a notch for the bottom of the follower spring base. Trim the spring down to what you see. You need you cut it and still have the two ribs that run down the inside of the front of the magazine, i believe they stop the follower from flipping?. All done with a leatherman in about 20 minutes. The pouch is fox tactical. The zipper broke on the fiirat pull if that says anything but it fits me perfect. I added a pachmyer slip on grip to help fill my hands a bit more.

Had my scout for about a week, I'm glad I got rid of my Savage M10 TR; this seems like a much handier and useful package. I picked up a Rhodesian sling and butt cuff from Andy's Leather. Ordered a set of Leupold 1" QRW low rings and will eventually put a Leupold 2.5x28mm IER scope.

So I am interested in getting one of these in the near future and I know that I want a RH stainless steel 18" version. So the only other variation I can get is the flash suppressor or not. I am wondering how the flash suppressor version works. I see it can be screwed on and off but is there a cap that would screw over the threads when the flash suppressor is off? How is the front site attached then and is it the same as the standard non flash supressor version? Can I expect to pay more for the flash supressor version? Thanks

Has anyone been sufferin' with ejection issues? My Hawkeye rifle (left hand, long action) tosses empty rounds about 15 feet. My Scout rifle (left hand, short action) routinely hangs up 4 of 10 rounds (sometimes more) in either steel or polymer magazines. Oddly, if I hold my tongue just right and run the bolt vigorously, it will copy the Hawkeye's performance. Any body have a suggestion about adjusting something or anything?

Mine does that very rarely. not enough for me to worry, and as you say if cycled with authority there is no issue. I think there is a thread farther down on this exact topic.
My CRF doesn't work worth #$%& though it may as well be a push feed bolt.

After owning my GSR for 2 years I finally got tired of the rough sloppy bolt and returned it to Snap Shots for warranty. It also had some other poorly finished areas with burrs that needed work. I had read that this was a typical problem in the Scout and just thought mine was the same until I acquired a like new Frontier. I realize they are different but based on the same action. The Frontiers bolt was just so much better. No sloppy play or binding. That is what made me decide to return the GSR. Yesterday I opened my e mail and was pleased to find a message from Snap Shot telling me that Ruger is replacing my rifle. The reason for this is, after polishing the raceways the bolt still runs rough. They feel that the bolt is "too small" thus allowing it to bind. I am happy with Snap Shots service and that Ruger is replacing my rifle. I consider myself a Ruger fan, having 10 different rifles, revolvers and shotguns. Some have been purchased new and some used. Out of ten this is the third to go back for warranty and I still have a Single Ten with tight cylinders to be returned. Overall not impressed.
