"Bull$h!t. Ruger mini 14 wasn't even around when the M16 was being developed and/or adopted."

Sorry to ruffle your feathers, bro. but the Ruger Mini-14 was designed originally in 1967 but not available for civilian use until 1973.
Forgive me for upsetting you!

so I am just pulling trigger on one of these , and wondering what guys are using for optics.
I was thinking something in the aimpoint or eotech line up or something similar
not a fan of the long eye relief full on scopes so want a low profile , smaller optics package.
this will be a 100 yard and well under , "CQD rifle" ..... "Close Quarter Deer" rifle

No prob, didn't mean to sound like a dickhead. The AR series was in development in the late '50's and I guess that is what I was thinking.

Thanks brother. The point I was trying to make about politics and the AR15 acceptance was the cozy relationship between Curtis LeMay and the CEO of Fairchild/Armalite along with the interference by defsec bean counter MacNamarra.
This hasty acceptance of the AR and it's subsequent "trial by fire" in Viet Nam did indeed cost many US lives. My 70 yo brain is indeed getting a bit foggy but as I recall Bill Ruger stated to the effect had his Mini-14 been introduced
a few years earlier he could have been a contender. Full disclosure, I have long been a fan of Bill Ruger's products including at one time a Mini-14! Unfortunately due to my rapidly diminishing pensions I have to limit myself to my GSR
and 10/22TD. Thanks again for your kind words.
Cheers;

Anyone know where to find the new models (composite/synthetic stocks) in Canada? All I seem to be able to find are the laminate ones with the flash supressor- feel like the muzzle break would be a better option (are there after market options in that regard?)

the only real accessories I can find are the XS sights and spare mags.
In my quest for a nice composite stock I've found next to nothing so have started on the process of making my own.
MDT posted that they might have thier HS3 chassis ready for these by fall which would interest me greatly
I really like the scout with no muzzle device. I also don't mind the laminate stock at all but for ruggedness and all weather reliability in hunting conditions, I want a carbon/glass composite

Does anyone know who's stocking the XS Sight Rail in Canada? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

I asked the same question in the general dealer forum...... no dealers responded :(

so I placed my order with brownells and bought a few more items I "could" have gotten in Canada but chose not to so I could add it to my brownells order to make the shipping worth while.

I simply can't believe no dealers in Canada are stocking a meaningfull selection of products from XS sights, they make some cool stuff for a lot of different firearms. maybe the margins are too low

X2 Exact same experience and solution! Also, the XS rail is well worth the effort of a Brownell's order IMO.

i thought i should pop my head in and post a 'hey how are ya' in this thread as i have one of these guns and i must admit it is my go to gun.
it is by far my favorite rifle that i own.
i fell in love with them when they showed them at the Shot Show in 2011 and when they started to send them out in 2012 i picked one up out of the very first batch that reached Canada and i have been in love with the gun since i got it!
i have had it out last couple hunting seasons and it took me a while to get use to the extended eye relief optic but now that ive used it for a while i am very fond of it.
whenever anyone asks me what the best all around rifle is i tell them if they are wanting to buy just one rifle to do it all this is it.
here is mine sporting the Leupold scout scope with quick detach rings and a ruger butt pad/mag holder and sling.
i have a couple of the big 20rd mags for it and a couple of the 5rd mags for it, all in metal.

oh ya, and its in left hand as well.

love this gun!

Might not be what you're looking for, but Impact Guns sells a Recon Scout stock made of aluminium for the Ruger GSS, only $500U$.;)

Cheers D

hmmmm cool, thx for the heads up, I checked it out.
Modular Driven Technologies here in BC said they might have a light chassis ready for these for the fall, I'm interested in seeing what they end up offering. So in the meantime, I've been working with some composites in my shop to come up with something custom of my own ;)

OOO Exciting! Looking forward to a chassis being available!

I just picked one of these up on trade and I am very pleased so far. Very fun gun to shoot! The one thing I don't like is that you need a tool to adjust the peep sight. I wish it was more garand/m14 style. Other than that, really cool. Not sure if I want to mount an optic traditional style, or scout style yet. I wouldn't mind traditional style at least for a while to put a decent optic on it and see what it is capable of accuracy wise.

The Ruger scout...

So far I have put a Muzzle brake on it (6 port 3 either side and 3 top ports to slow muzzle rise), replaced the bolt handle with a tactical bolt handle (found the bolt handle too small for my hand). Added the XS rail (big improvement), Scoped with a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 30mm MRAD, going to use Leupold QD rings when every anyone in Canada has them, For now fixed..

Upcoming, replace the trigger guard for the "MK2 Ruger Scout Machined Alloy Mag Box / Winter Trigger Guard".

ya...DO TELL..... where did you order that from LOL

Well, after many correspondences with Impactgun, I failed to get one. I tried, but they will not sell to me..... Importer??? What would fees be, It's not restricted/regulated..

Now I'm trying "http://ww w.mark2tactical.com" who appears to make a chassis for the Ruger scout as well as the trigger guard. But they don't have it on sale like impact guns.

will soon find out.

Pete
