The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

The XS rail covers the lower half of the front post. I haven't shot any groups with a scope yet to determine how accurate this rifle can be. And didn't shoot it with a scope before either. I was wondering about how the scout rail will effect harmonics - guess I will find out soon!

If you could kindly post a short range report I think a few CGNers would be happy to read about your results.

I was thinking about getting a .303 but a lack of parts lately has given me pause, it will be a good rifle but I'm concerned about longevity. I don't plan on owning more than one rifle this size so the one I buy will need to last and do a good job. My second choice was a Ruger American chambered in .308 but now this RGS has elbowed its way into the picture. It appears to be a very fine gun. The bolt looks very similar to a mauser.

I've taken more big game animals with my old .303 enfields than any other rifles in my collection.
But seeing as I've retired my dad's old .303 from my hunting adventures, I replaced it with a Ruger Scout and I think it was a solid choice considering how the scout is set up.
A solid choice in a general purpose hunting rifle suitable for most big game in Canada, widespread ammunition availability and i'll say, the XS sight rail is a dandy.

I also tried to get one of the aluminum winter trigger assemblies and no dice LOL so I'm gonna crank up the milling machine and see what I can come up with. I need a new project and practice on the mill LOL

What's your vote when it comes to hunting: 16" barrel for handiness or 18.5" barrel for the extra 200fps of velocity?

My vote is 16.5"

There was an excellent write up a while back on the GSR (Rifle Mag Nov/12), the author had tested 5 different 308 factory loads in a 16.5" GSR vs a 22" Hawkeye (the Hawkeye was reaching or exceeding the factory published fps). The average variance in fps was only a 111fps loss for the 16.5" barrel.

I have the 18.5" and chose that version because of years of success shooting .308 from 18.5" barrels (m14 ect)
I don't really see the point of going shorter but to each his own. My scout is for hunting and will probably never see a rifle range as it is not a target rifle or fun gun. I bought it as a hunting tool and I believe the 18.5" barrel has an edge over the shorter barrel for my hunting purposes.

I'm curious, why have you chosen to hunt with the Ruger and not an M305 of some sort?

Originally I got the scout for my wife and got a good deal on the ss laminate, but she wanted the walnut one , so I got a second one LOL I actually have the stainless laminate one listed in ee because we really only need one in the house. I have 2 hunts each year(out of several) I would use the scout for and that is ambush hunting blacktails in south coastal mountains of BC and from my mule deer/whitetail treestand location near chasm BC. perfect rifle and caliber for both applications. otherwise, it's my wife's moose and deer rifle when she comes hunting with me.
I pretty much keep my m14 hunting rifle for my moose trips as a back up rifle and to play around with but If I'm hunting around my place on my quad, usually I've got my m14 ;)
in truth, I'm embarking on building up a custom "scout rifle" similar in all ways to the ruger scout 18.5, but in a rem 700 type titanium action stainless barrel and in .338federal

The only thing I don't really care for is the big magazine seems unnecessary and kind of ugly.

one thing about these rifles that does impress me is that the magazine system works extremely well, flawless in fact.
I didn't like the steel mags, locked in fine but are big and kinda loose fitting. The polymer mags however, no issues.
I've seen a DIY on the 3 round mag but the 5 rounders are available and they don't stick out too far.

Anyone see the "Distributer Exclusive" Walnut/Stainless scouts made for Lipsey's?

The barrel is 14.6". Looking at the pics of the ones at Prophet River, the Walnut stocked rifles barrels look shorter than the standard GSR's

14.6" ? Nope haven't seen those. I think Prophet has the 16" barrelled ones. Mines an 18 and for 308 I wouldn't want to go any shorter.
Pretty damn handy rifles, the scout is fast becoming one of my favorite rifles. Can't wait to field one hunting this fall

This is my new scout, put a leupold vx2 1.5-4 scout scope. The Hornady bag holds the mag and some extra bullets. Im changing out the brake for a quieter flash suppressor. Seems to like 180s better then 150s and I will get on handloading when I have some time. Thank you 22lrguy for helping me with the picture process:)
