The Changing Face/Fads of AR-15 Ownership

I dunno by I still think the redi mag system is COOL.

Well... Mag couplers have their uses and so do offset buis in action shooting.. Offset buis allow the shooter to quickly engage short-range targets while the scope is set to reach out since adding a small dot instead of running the irons puts you in open division. I'm not a big fan of LAR mag couplers but I got one for my Black Dog mags to run rimfire matches as I can run a stage of any size with what's in hand and it's very quick to reload since my hand is already in that workspace instead of having to reach down to my belt and get a mag in and in action shooting split-seconds count. Just ask this oldtimer

I guess I was thinking more in the context of my work. Offset sights don't really matter much though I did see them in the field for a while, they have since gone away. I've also seen the redimag but that since has been replaced with easier access mag pouch like the bfg elastic ones.

Redimag seemed to get hooked up in cars and didn't allow the rifle to slide in between the seat and the tranny properly.

...The advantage of keymod are lightweight, modular and free float...
Over what... There plenty of quad rails or slick side rails that fulfill that without having to keep extra bits of picatinny around.

I'd rather run a slick side rail and work with what is available.

All sorts of shooters out there... The main thing for all of us is to get the bare minimum that works for the intended purpose... My restricted guns travel in locked cases, with trigger locks on, so no worries about them getting snagged on anything until I'm actually shooting a match :)

I can't criticise anything Jerry has on his AR. There is something to be said for a magnifying sight and a non-magnifying sight on the same rifle.

With mlok or keymod you dont use pic rail. Instead you use direct attach accessories. Pic rail sections are an option and are much lighter than full quad handguards. The other benefit to mlok/keymod is the slimmer profile. Some keymod handguards weigh the same as factory plastic ones. Both mlok and keymod are not intended for the guy who moves his gear around on a daily basis but they are easy to work with.

Most keymod tubes are just one rail running along the top (if any).. So they are pretty light, skinny and minimalistic. They give you the option of adding more rails if needed (useful for us action shooters) but only where you need them instead of having the added weight/bulk of a quadrail setup. I don't own one (got Troy alpharail which is similar) but I see the utility value

I am officially FAR out of the loop on current firearms accessory trends apparently lol
Thanks for the explanation though. Much appreciated.

I really like kmr handguards and money isn't a problem..... But there is enough look and systems for everyone and for every wallet ;)

No worries.. You were happy with your setup and I recently completed a new competition build.. Was mostly in the market for a keymod or mlok tube in 15" for the reasons cited, but the Troy tube saved me a bunch of cash without sacrificing functionality. You've been more than helpful on many occasions so I'm happy to be of some use :)

I guess it all depends on what your adapting your AR15 to shoot.. If I was shooting Action. Id prolly just go with a solid FF tube. Were accessories are nil.

While on the topic of AR trends/gimmick accessories.
What was the consensus among you AR15 accessory types regarding the BAD lever thingy that attached to the bolt catch?
The first time I saw it it seemed like a great idea.
The more I saw people using them (especially after I handled an unloaded rifle with one attached) the more flimsy and gimmicky they seemed. Never got to actually spend any time shooting with one, just handling others flashy race guns that had them on.

I couldn't get one to work reliably for me (BHO issues iirc, but it's been a while).. Didn't spend too much time on it as I realized that manipulating it could get an overzealous RO to DQ me or result in me DQing myself (putting the finger inside the trigger guard when not actively engaging targets) so
i just took it off. Also adds to mechanical complexity and things that can snag too much for the dubious benefit that it offers, so off to the parts bin she goes.

Picking up my new XCR-L this weekend,5.56 keymod light barrel. It's mainly to be a coyote rig and plinker,so I plan to just keep it simple without too much tacticool junk for weighing it down.Im thinking for the full length top rail,a 6x24x56 in a PEPR mount with Trijicon RMR on top,and of course 45o/s BUIS in case of primary and secondary optics failure amidst attack of jihadist coyotes.3 o'clock rail reserved for 1,000,000 candlepower spotlight in case Alberta someday allows night hunting of predators....in the mean time, possibly a laser and certainly 2pt QD sling mount.6 o'clock obviously a 13-23" bipod and Magpul AFG,and 9 o'clock will wear a custom retrofitted for keymod WW2 German bayonet, for as any serious varminter will attest, tunnelling insurgent prairie dogs are notoriously infamous for surfacing at uncormfortably close quarters.

Under-rail Backup Mini-14, or no?

I had one that came on one of my AR's and I didn't care for it, never really used it. I wouldn't buy one to put on that's for sure.

Aye,
The general word of mouth/opinions I have heard were overwhelmingly negative.
