The Cooey Make-Over Thread

I acquired my Cooey model 60 from my friends father when he didn't want to be bothered registering it when the gun registry came into effect. I don't think it was used much but it was in rough shape, a light dusting of rust all over. The bolt was hidious, every thing was gummed up and the finish was scratched and in rough shape.

I cleaned the metal with fine steel wool and light oil. Thankfully it wasn't pitted to bad. I buffed the bolt, magazine rod, trigger guard, original screws and butt plate.

When I sanded the stock it was pretty dirty around the bolt where old dirty oil seeped into the wood. I sanded out what I could but it still has some signs of age. I was going to refinish it the same brown as was on it but after I saw that the wood had this white swipe around the receiver I figured I'd just clear coat it. I was afraid to go too deep with the sanding in order to remove the black specs in the light area but now that it's done I actually like it the way it is.

What I would like to do next is get the scope plate (weaver #2 as the holes are already in the receiver for it) and mount a scope. lol if anyone has one for sale with 1" rings attached please let me know. :)

Screwed the #2 side mount on just before I took the pics. Still looking for the tall piece with the 1" rings.

Lookin' good superman

Thanks Crjc. That side plate you have, how do you mount the rings to it? Is it a top plate that attaches? The Weaver #2's I've seen are all one peice. I've seen a plate like yours for sale on ebay but I can't figure out how the rings/scope would mount to it as I don't see any other holes.

Regards, Jason.

The older style Weaver N2 is all one piece. The rings are mostly 3/4" or 7/8". You'll want one of these to mount a scope which is contemporary with the Cooey.

The newer style looks like a 2-piece job, the #2 bracket (Weaver #48402) which varies by make and model; then a detachable universal bracket with 1" rings, either Weaver #48340 (short version) or Weaver #48350 (long version). This can be used to mount a newer 1" scope. I haven't got all the pieces and put it together yet, but I'm guessing from the catalog and some earlier posts that this is how it works.

I need some wood finish help guys, I've finished cutting down and shaping a stock for my kids 64b, and i don't know if i should stain before tru-oil, or if it will darken up with just tru-oil alone? It seems really light to me, and i don't overly care for "blonde" stocks. Help?!?!

Take a wet cloth and wipe the wood. That is what the wood should look like after tru-oil. Personally I would use a polyurethane. It's quicker, cleaner and you don't have to worry about the wood getting sticky or oil seeping back out of the wood later on if you put it on too thick. Polyurethanes comes in matte finishes in case you didn't want a super shiny finish.

What kind of wood is it?

Try putting oil on an off-cut if you have one, see what it looks like.

My guess would be birch, but maybe maple. I do have an off cut though, so i will try that... funny how the obvious things are right in front of us, but someone else has to point them out!! Thanks guys.

i am currently waiting for my PAL to arrive, when it does my father in law is giving me his Cooey model 75. I had a good look at it the other day, and the only markings stamped on the barrel are Cooey Model 75, there is no indication as to whether it is S,L, or LR, no serial number or date of manufacture. How do I determine what ammo it takes??

It will be .22 S, L, or LR.
