The Cooey Make-Over Thread

Here is another....model 39 refinished in the natural walnut. The bluing on this gun was like new when i got it but the wood needed help. All the other guns on the rack are pre Winchester Cooey 84's in various gauges.

Cool thread! I just rebuilt did my Dads Cooey from the 60's. Had to crown, reblue and refinish the stock. It looks pretty good now but I'm having a problem getting the bolt to stay in. It seems to work ok when out of the stock but when I screw it in the bolt will sometimes beak free and slide out the back. This never happened until I took it apart.

Any advise?

P.S. Pics to follow!!

I still need to source a replacement trigger guard. Any suggestions as to where I'd have the best luck finding one?

I as re-crowned the muzzle. It looked pretty rough but the rifling in the barrel looks excellent!

The cold bluing worked pretty well.

Been on this forum for years and just discovered this thread! I have a model 60 in the safe that was given to me neglected. These posts are motivating me to give it some much deserved TLC!

Hi guys,
Wish I would have read the top of the forum and seen there was a sticky for the Cooey, wouldn't have made a new thread my bad sorry. I have a Cooey model 60 .22 it doesn't have the factory screw holes. I want to mount a scope to it. I was wondering if any Cooey owners could tell me the distance of the screw holes centre to centre and distance from the end of how far in the first hole is? How far down from the top? Is it drilled and tap all the way through? I want to side mount it with a weaver mount or something similar any info on companies that sell the side mounts would be awesome. Cabela's and Whole Sale sell them but not sure which one. I haven't made it into a store yet to have a look just looked online. Any info would be appreciated!!

Another Cooey stock refinished.....this is the stock of a Cooey 64B. Did this stock in Minwax Red Mahogany (225), with an added faux wood grain using a darker red based stain. And like the other stocks I've completed, its finished with Tru-oil

Son wants to fix an old neglected sureshot (60), I have in the basement. A friend gave it to me years ago,the stock is pretty much toast but he took it apart and installed it on my Cooey 60 stock, said it fired fine.
Down the basement he went and found a peice of oak, rough cut it,planed, router, drilled and came up with a good start to something that might work. Not sure what he is thinking but I know it's not going to be exact copy of the original stock, looks like he wants to try more of a pistol grip.

I am in the process of refinishing/refurbishing a few old cooeys (two 60s, a 64B and a 'rabbit')

I would love to be able to put decent target sights onto the 60s, I'm thinking a globe front sight, preferably with different globe/pin/?? options and then a nice target rear sight with fine (maybe 1/8 moa or better per click) windage and elevation adjustments.

I want to use them as training rifles for the kids until they are strong enough to easily hold up a real 22 target rifle (those things can get heavy!)

Does anyone have any ideas for what sights could be used for this? Put on by a gunsmith, probably but I'm having trouble finding decent target sights that aren't super high-end $$$

if anyone with a ACE 1 22.Long has a chance could you take some pics of your trigger mech on your ace 1 for me.
I have to build one, as mine was lost in move about 15 years ago.
to scale would be great but I can size it as needed.
Thanks in Advance for your time

I'm going to do a bit of a photo dump here for my first Cooey makeover......

It's also my first hot bluing project, and I'm quite satisfied with the results.

Stock was just sanded down and given 6 coats of tung oil, with 24 hrs between coats. It's got a few defects, but it's still a good, solid piece of wood.

I'm not sure what the person was after, but they dimple stamped, what looks like initials, into the the receiver. This is all that's visible with the stock on. Also, too deep to sand/polish out.

I didn't know that there was a silver spot on the front site until after I finished bluing everything. Not sure if the bluing process really brought it out or if my pre-cleaning solution just cleaned it well enough to see it.
