The Cooey Make-Over Thread

Wondering if anyone else has a cooey model 75, or similar.
I picked up a cheap one a few years ago, and it is in great shape, however the trigger has a lot of movement from side to side. Any tips/tricks on how to remove the side to side movement?

Thanks!

My first rifle of my own was a Cooey model 60 bought at a lands and forest auction of confiscated guns when I was about 12, cant remember what my dad paid but maybe 15 bucks, unfortunately it was stolen about 8 years later from our farmhouse along with my shotgun. Now I'm into CZ but just might keep my eye open for one of these after seeing the pics and the beautiful restorations done on some of these old Canadian classics.

Remove the stock and have a look at the trigger, it's a pretty simple looking setup. You could probably just squeeze it together with vise grips without removing the trigger from the receiver. Should take up the side to side movement.

Another culprit could be that the pin holding the trigger to the receiver is loose. I've seen a few different models of Cooeys that actually had a nail used for that pin.

back in the early 80's my dad went and picked up a Cooey Model 39 for me to learn on and use at the farm.
he went to that little gun shop in Calgary on 16th Ave and 4th that use to be there up until the 90's.
the gun looked to have some modifications done to it from the owner of the store, replaced the metal trigger guard with a plastic one and replaced the butt pad with a Savage one.
but to my young eyes the gun was the best looking gun i had ever seen!

i put a leather sling on it and that poor single shot got dragged along with me on the back of the dirt bike and trike for a couple years until i got my 10/22.
unfortunately for the Cooey i was not a gentle lover.
i treated that gun like..... well i ran her hot and left her dirty and lets just leave it at that.
but that gun always ran great and functioned flawlessly.

fast forward to a couple years back and my daughters where at the age that i thought they would enjoy learning to shoot.
i dug to the back of my gun safe and found the old Cooey 39 and i had forgotten just how ruff the gun was!

there was no way my daughters were going to shoot the gun in the condition the stock was in.
so, project time!

ive never redone a stock before so i thought now was going to be the perfect time to learn!
thankfully i made a quick little video of the process when i did it a couple years back and posted it onto youtube.

you can see in the video just how butchered the stock got from being carried on the old Honda Trike!

anyways, stripped it and then hand sanded then hand rubbed in 3-4 layers of tung oil.
my daughters loved learning to shoot on that gun and my son will learn this summer on it.
the gun looks great and is ready for grand-kids to learn on in a couple more years when they arrive.

and the Video!
and no comments about how crappy the video is, i made this 4 years ago!

I did and have no regrets. Found this rifle form a sight sponsor for an insanely good deal. Just cleaned it up and shot it once and I got to safe it is accurate. But the sights are off but one problem at a time.

Here is the before. Its not the worst condition by any means but these guns deserve a second life, well I am sure this gun was probably owned by multiple people.

The after which I am very happy with. It also smells like my lee enfield now. Only took me an hour and a bit. Time well spent.

Just picked up a pair of Cooey 60's. One is in real good shape and taped for scope mounts, the other is not so clean. It was painted from muzzle to butt plate ship gray, oil paint. In the process of getting it apart, I trashed the threads to the main threaded rod holding it all together. It was painted into the thumb screw. Anyone know of the top of their heads what size and pitch it may be.

That is some nice walnut for a 64. Likely because Donald Cooey was still over seeing things at Winchester/Cooey in 64.

I agree. That walnut was hiding under that brutal paint on finish Cooey was known for using. Once I stripped off that peeling finish, I was stunned to see what was hiding underneath. All it needed was a few coats of BLO to give the grain some pop. Then it was just a matter of adding countless coats of tru-oil to give it that nice gloss finish

Ranger Rabbit

Here are the first few images of my 27inch Ranger Rabbit single shot with peep. Not sure if it will be redone needs to shoot some bullseye first haha.

Nice that you have the peep sight on that "rabbit". However, I don't think that is the original barrel in that stock. That is the later Winchester style stock but that is an earlier Cooey barrel with that style of peep sight mounting at the rear of the breech. I think the barrel is from a model 78 branded Ranger for Eatons.

I restored the finish on my rabbit to as new with rust bluing. It gives a great deep lustre which is permanent and doesn't have a sulfur smell like cold bluing. You can buy commercial rust bluing solution or make your own. The real challenge is to find a tank long enough to boil your rabbit in
