There's enough of the old Cooey .22's out there likely there are lots that have received a "make-over" or "re-do'. So, post your pics/stories here.

Rimfire Mods please feel free to make this a sticky.... ;)

Here's mine:

I just picked up a fairly clean, but well used, Winchester/Cooey 600 and stripped the stock for an oil refinish. The metal was pretty good so after some clean-up with fine steel wool & oil I think I will just leave it as is.

Topped her off with a little Simmons 3-9x32mmAO .22 scope:

Old stock finish:

New stock finish [sling swivel studs also added]:

I've since had 'er up to the range for a try-out. A few boxes of econo American Eagle 40 gr solids thru 'er. Shoots like a dream. I love my "new to me" Winchester .22.....

Pics updated, June 2023, with Barska 3-9x32mm 'plinkster' scope installed:

She is beautiful man, what did you use on the finished stock? (i know little about refinishing)
Assuming you re blued it, did you just use a do it yourself kit? (if so, which one)

I have one that I have been thinking about bringing back up to its glory.

Once I had the stock out of the action and all the attachments off [sling swivels, butt plate etc] I used furniture stipper to remove the old finish. I refinished it with a couple coats of Watco medium walnut oil stain. The metal was just gone over with fine steel wool & gun oil to removed any gunk/surface rust and that's it [ie. no reblue]. It came out so nice I thought I'd just leave it "as is".

Looks good! Nothing like getting rid of that old varnish like finish, and letting the REAL wood show through!

Everyone has seen mine before. They just didn't realize it! :D

I'm kind of torn between refinishing my '60 and letting it ride the way it is with minor surface rust and massive scratches on the stock.

I think if it was re-finished I might be less likely to toss it in the truck or take it to the range on a cold and rainy day.

Mind you they do clean up very nice.....

Pics of my restoration are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/dpoisson/Restoring22?authkey=Gv1sRgCN-C15Ph3pGzSg#

Bought the metal parts: All rusted and almost no blue left. Sanded everything back up (followed a lot of advice from midwayUsa's youtube videos) with 200, 400 and 600 grit wet sandpaper. Then used steel wool 0, 00 and 0000 and finally gave it a good polish. Then cold blued the metal parts.

I tried making several handmade stocks for it...then finally gave up (I came real close to making something nice though. Best suggestion ever: Practice practice practice on CHEAP wood) and purchased the original stock. Removed the original varnish, sanded everything down and put 3 coats of watco danish oil. Looks real nice enough thought there are still some slight bumps on it. Drilled and installed swivel studs.

Unfortunately, I sold the rifle just recently. It shot GREAT (we had a fun afternoon of plinking clay pigeons mounted in trees around the camp and it was hard to miss any of them, even when they were super far away). The rifle was just too heavy to lug around in addition to my moose hunting rifle (it was mainly for grouse).

Here's my 600 that I did a minor refinish of. When I bought it the stock was cracked in half and repaired. Whoever did the repair just slathered stain over top of the original finish to try and cover up the wood filler and it looked terrible. I just sanded off the original/repaired finish slapped on a coat of stain that was laying around the house and a couple quick light coats of satin varathane.

It's by no means perfect but it is a great improvement from the original. I didn't want to get too carried away making it nice because its going to see some heavy use in the gopher field next year.

Now, Pics!

Repair after refinishing, still not a great repair but looks better than before!

I topped it off with a 4x32 Nikon Prostaff and it shoots great!

Nice repair. The finish looks good too. Besides its a 22 so not likely to be further damage to the stock. Good save. Still you might be able to get a used stock worth finishing up for a few bucks. Have done that successfully a couple of times and sold the old stock too for someone that wants to paint it. Love the EE.

My 600 has the integral 3/8" dovetail on the top of the receiver, too. I just used the .22 rings that came in the box with my Simmons scope to mount it.

Here's some pics of a 60 that I re-did for shirts and giggles. Re-did the stock wood, sprayed a couple of coats of Tremclad satin black on the metal after filing out the bigger dings, re-did the butt plate from antique brass, and re-made the trigger guard from titanium.
Cheers!!

And this is a 750 that I put together for my son. Its got a shortened stock, cut down and re-crowned barrel, hand cut dove-tail for the front sight blade, second action screw added, scope rail from my Ruger 22/45 JB welded on, and a red-dot. He loves it and shoots the gongs till theres just an empty ammo box left!!
Cheers!!

PS-sniperelite and I did our rifles at about the same time. Let there be no mistake, his rifle is ACCURATE and accounted for more than a few gophers last summer!!:)
