The Cooey Make-Over Thread

This Thread is amazing!
We have 2 Cooeys a Breach .12 and a .22Lr (don't know the model by heart)
The .22 is at the end of its road right now, its so rusted compared to anything on this thread and for some reason it goes off when you just bump the gun haha...

So for right now it stays locked up with its broken stock that is camo duck taped from head to toe. I will be sure to post photos one day for everyone to see the beast haha.

I know this is a rimfire thread but atleast this is a cooey. A friend of mine brought this over yesterday and as you can see it was hurting.

After a good sandblast, re-blue and refinish this is what it looks like now.

Hope you enjoyed the show.

An old Cooey Model 39 single shot. As you can see, it's had a rather rough life.

The idea behind this was to turn an old "junker" into something that may end up as a Birthday present next year for my (then to be 12 yr old) nephew. He's been doing well with the pellet rifles and his paint ball marker, so it may be time to let him step up another level.

Even the white plastic spacer is faded and yellowed.

You can see the horrible state this was in ... looks like they forgot to smooth the file marks from the factory when the relief cut was made for the chamber opening.

A few treatments with Circa 1850, ad then a lot of work sanding it all down. Underneath was some nice clear pine.

The chambr opening. Now smoothed out and deepened slightly to make it match the opening in the receiver itself.

A nice coat of Minwax Red Chestnut stain, followed by 3 coats of Minwax Spar Eruthane, then 1 coat of Howard's Feed-N-Wax

Even managed to clean up the old white spacer. Amazing what some elbow grease, rubbing compound and steel wool will do.

Bolt was replaced as well. During disassembly I saw that the extractor was missing. This gave me a good reason to replace it with one with a handle that was not bent back towards the shooter. I'll never understand why people do that to their bolt handles :(

I also "scrubbed" the barrel with superfine steel wool and oil, and it is looking better, but it needs rebluing. That will have to wait for another day.

That looks amazing now. Good job on the restore. :D

Thanks guys! I would have posted pics of the Marlin 57 I just did as well, but this is a Cooey thread.

As much as I love the satiny hand rubbed tung oil finish on Quality stock, for the cheaper stocks I find the high gloss of the Eruthane gives a life and depth to the wood that it otherwise would not have.

I almost did this one in an amber-honey stain, but at the last moment saw this color on the rack at Home Hardware and thought it would highlight the grain of the pine stock a little better. Will have to see if I can find a Maple stock and it will be done in the Honey-Amber range :)

gunsaholic:
I found the Feed-N-Wax at Home Hardware of all places (on the shelf above the Minwax stains). I figured since it's Bee's Wax, Citrus Oil and Carnuba Wax, that it should add a good extra layer of "outdoor" protection to the wood. It certainly makes the gun smell nicer :D

The guys on rimfire central are always talking about how great Howard's Feed & Wax is but I can never find it in Winnipeg. There is no Home Hardware in the city. Next time I am in Portage La Prairie I will try there. I did pick up a bottle of sunwax from Rona. It contains carnauba wax, beeswax and orange oil. It seems to work quite well and it covers minor sctatches.

If you can'tfind it locally, PM me, I'd be quite happy to work out a deal and mail you a bottle. Should last you a few years ... doesn't take much of the stuff to do a nice job.
