The Cooey Make-Over Thread

(ceriksson, did you fabricate new hammer and bolt handles out of brass or plate the old ones? your right it looks classy.)

Going by the trigger guard and buttplate and the grooves in the hammer knob, I would think they have been plated.

im loving the brass trigger guard too. Cooeys are a dime a dozen around here and a broken plastic trigger guard makes them ever cheaper. Brass is easier to work than steel, makes it an easier fix, and smart looking.

I mounted a Weaver scope on the 64 today and took it to the range. It's a great shooter. The target is 10 shots at 50 meters.

Very cool!

I hope you don't mind but I edited your post to show the photos. I did that by copying the image address and using the add image button to do so if you want to do it in the future.

Thanks, I just started using the google picture hosting after my photobucket account went down the drain. I'm not familiar with the details of it yet. I'm stil hoping the photobucket people can recover all my pictures.

I just bought a cooey with a plastic trigger guard. I'd assumed that this meant it had been replaced. Your post makes me wonder if that's not the case. Is it possible that a plastic trigger guard on a cooey is original equipment?

Yes. After Winchester took over many had plastic trigger guards. Just another cost cutting measure.

Well, you guys have inspired me. I recently inherited my dad's old Cooey 600 which has been sitting in a barn for 20 years. I WAS going to just take what rust I could off, and leave the stock chipped and faded. However, after seeing some in much worse shape than mine (that single shot shotgun comes to mind...) being restored to some actually very nice pieces, I have decided to bring this old relic back to life. I cleaned up the action so it works smooth now, and I must say, the thing is a real shooter. So far I've scrubbed off the surface rust on all the blued parts, and polished the bolt. Do you guys have any tips or tricks on how to refinish the checkering on the rifle stock? And I guess I'll have to give this rust blueing a shot (I'll probably practice on an old set of pliers or something first). Anywho, thanks for the motivation guys.

One with fancy trigger guard? It's a Canuck jr with 16" barrel. I got it for my 4yo niece. Was in rough shape missing rear sight. Never seen one like it either. I refinished the stock in true oil and metal with coldblue. Canadian tire stuff. Turned out great. I shortened the stock and re did the buttplate. It was too long even for me. Stock appears to be original. It had an ugly screw connecting it but I drilled larger hole and installed same nut as model 60. So it's easy to takedown. At the end I buffed and polished the bolt. They can look new with a bit of work.

I got for Christmas a Sureshot .22 CAL S-L-LR which I assume means short, long and long rifle, and a senior 22 Long Rifle which uses the same bolt as the Sureshot and the other Cooeys but I cant find information on it. I have two bolts but one is missing the knob on the handle so I hope I can find someone to make me one. I look forward to restoring this fun looking little guns they will be my first ever restoration job.

The sure shot was a store brand name for Sears. The senior is the Eatonia brand made for Eatons. Later they switched names from Eatonia to Ranger. Be aware that not all bolts have the same size handle shaft size where it slides into the groove on the receiver. Also headspace may have to be adjusted with a replacement bolt.

the ball can be found on |EE as well as the complete bolt. yes they can be tricky to fit 100%. i have thought to take a metal skull to drill and tap or a small dice. i imagine cold weld would work.

Yes i am a big fan of mod 39, all the short rifles as eatonia, canuck etc. only 16"-18" barrel and cute as hell. i am always on the lookout for them needing work if price is right.... Last show i met a collector. must have had a lot of them as he was selling at least 20 at once. i bought one... sweet gun.(second from the top.) I fired it and is accurate as hell with cb longs. Next time i will get one i want to keep>
