The dilema of CoreyTheCowboy

Ken waters pet loads gave me some good results.
46.5 gr of imr 3031with a 196gr Norma plastic point gives me sub moa and 2550 fps out of a 22inch barrel.

48gr of imr 4064 with a 220 gr gameking at 2450 fps sub moa

47gr one 4064 200gr Speer hot cor at 2600 fps with 1 inch group.

Work up at your own discretion, these loads are safe in my rifles.

Here's the beauty FN98 .270 from Why Not?

Any suggestions on what to use to fill in those ugly stock gaps? Or would doing that reduce it's ugliness too much?

I feel like it fits the definition of ugly, at least in my traditional view of handsome rifles. It also fits the definition of a handy, fairly light (about 7 1/4lbs) and mostly weatherproof pack/snowmachine/truck rifle. I've screwed in a Skinner Lo-Pro as a temporary rear sight and am still undecided on a front sight.

I've also got a 8mm/06 reamer coming my way, so once it becomes a "wildcat", it should still have enough panache to be cool to rifle looneys...

You can use bondo (auto body fill) to fill in the barrel channel and tang.Basically you strip the barreled action and cover it with a wax or releasing agent, put the needed amount of Bondo in the barrel channel etc then tighten down the barreled action .When the Bondo is dry remove the action and sand the stock and paint

I brought it over to my parent's yesterday and my Dad was of course disgusted the minute he saw the synthetic stock. I think he thought I was joking. Then he looks at the stamping and says,
"8x57? Why?"
I had to steal a line from Mr. Wagner and said,
"Why not? But actually, I'm going to rechamber it to 8mm/06. I wanted a winter project"
He thinks about that for a second, and being a devout .35 Whelen fan, goes,
"Ahh, okay. So that's just a necked up 30/06 to 8mm?"
I nodded and said,
"Yeah, .323"
He smirks and says,
"Oh, so it's like a Baby Whelen"

Stubborn old fart...

Thank you for this advice, that's just what I was hoping to hear.

A more efficient 35 Whelen. LOL - dan

Cory, be careful when doing that that you don't wrap the bedding around the barrel past the mid point or around any action protrusions or you will have a bugger of a time separating the action and stock.

Dunnoh, but spray foam ran t'ween me ears.
Release the action, putter back on and spray foam the inners.
Trim the outer with a sharp razor knife.
Sand the bawrill channel and then seal the foam.

Shazzzam...........pewt awna flippy flawpy recoil pad and yer sty'linn.

Why Nawt..........eh?

Bondo ....smondo. Too keep it truly ugly....well chewed bubblegum or chewing tobacco. That way you stay within the ugly, and have someyhing to chew in a pinch if you get lost.

Truly ugly....hacksaw off 1/2" of barrel with a dull blade, or Macgyver a Tapco Tupperware stock....maybe a Pink Boyds thumbhole. Add a $10 chinese knockoff red dot. Animals dont need to be shot, just cut their throats as they are laughing too loud to run away.

I guess I would approach it as if it was serious? Drill a few mechanical locks in there and then use a gel epoxy, like Acraglas Gel - several drops of the Brownell's dye for it to get very black. Liberal release agent on the short tongue and on the masking tape that I would have lined that stock exterior with - then plan to dress it down "flush" with fine sandpaper?? Have not actually tried that, but staring at one here that I was considering to do that. You first.

I would probably put at least one layer of masking tape around the front of that nose, maybe two layers, to create a bit of a gap at the front?

Pretty sure I have choices of mauser bottom metal - might just find one with the longer tongue, for that stock...

Thank you all for the suggestions on the stock. It's going to be a winter project if I do anything.

Also heard today that this thread has inspired another local gunnut to "seriously investigate" a FN98 8x57 since I'll have a 8mm/06 reamer...might have to start a 8mm/06 Deer Hunt Club in Atikokan. All because of Ted...buy Why Not?

I am the other 8mm-06 fancier in our small town. Just ordered a nice 98 commercial Husqvarna from Trade Ex for the project. I hope all works out and I don't end up with an odd chambered rifle with no re sale value. I think I will let the Cowboy "work" on his first. This is all Ted's fault....
