Back in "the day", I humped the FN C1 & C2 for 13 years and the C7 for 15 years. Shooting the 500 yd deliberate with the FN I would generally score 27/35, with the C7, 29/35. Which rifle stood up to the abuse generated by a group of young infanteers... the FN of course. Given the "dedicated marksmanship" programs now being generated in North America, maybe a 7.62mm rifle was a good idea. Given the fact that the M16/C7 is still being "improved" 50 years after its inception, maybe it wasn't the best choice. As for the weight issue, to a young infanteer humping in excess of 54 pounds of assorted kit, your body adapted to the rifle. To somebody in their '60's, I'll give you the fact that its heavy.
