The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 OWNERS thread.

When swapping buffers make sure the one you try is the same length, one of the other guys posted that he broke the guide pin bearing thing on the top of the bolt off of his from it over traveling. I'm guessing he put in one of those stubby 308 carbine buffers.

that guy was me, and yes my own fault.not thinking to fast. changed over to a rifle length tube and put in the same short tube buffer and spring. allowed to bolt to travel to far rearward and drove the roller into the back of the lower receiver breaking off the roller

Did you ever find a fix? Buy a new bolt? One time warranty replacement?

Update for those interested. I had sent my rifle in for warranty work at 1423 rounds because I was having FTE/stovepipe issues and my buffer was damaged. I'm happy to report that I've fired 270 rounds since its return with zero issues, hands down the longest stretch without a problem. Round count is now 1692.

That's disappointing to hear. I'm hoping it will work okay, I'll pop it in this weekend. Did you drop out the retainer pin or leave it in? I put the H2 in my rifle and I really like it.

I left the buffer retaining pin in as I swapped in the Aramspec out of my 14.5" at the range. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at it to see why the bolt wouldn't go back. I have a carbine Armaspec in my 14.5 and a h3 Aramspec in my 8.5 and i really like them too which is why i wanted to see if i could get one to work in my fx9.

I do think these things would be better off with a stronger spring

The stock spring does feel soft compared to a standard carbine spring.
I don't think changes are needed but it doesn't hurt to fiddle around a little and feel for yourself what difference it makes.

I did the bolt mod the other day, haven't fired it yet though. maybe Sunday if I have time to get out in the yard for some play time.

I did the bolt mod as well while I had it apart inspecting it after experiencing a slam fire while releasing the slide onto an already chambered single round recently.

Safety ON , finger nowhere near the trigger...thumb slide forward and bang !!

Not cool !

Wolverine assured me it was probably a debris issue and not a common occurrence associated with the FX-9. It was at the 1000 round mark with no issues other than the fact that it has weak bolt hold open retention , where it will release with a firm bump on the buttstock or a vigorous mag insertion. OR when you set it down on the buttstock while it is locked open . Wolverine told me that is a characteristic of the FX-9 .

Owners be AWARE ... keep that thing pointed in a safe direction EVERY time you release the bolt ( intentionally or unexpectedly... as per “ FX-9 characteristic “ ) to chamber a round. A slam fire while NOT practicing SAFE MUZZLE DIRECTION could prove to be disastrous.

Let’s hope this is not a recurring issue with this pcc.

Be safe.

A link to my post detailing the event a bit more.

That's a new one.

Having the bolt go home after a bump is common and just the way the AR is, it only takes a little bump for the inertia of the bolt to take the pressure off the bolt catch for a moment and the spring will pull it down allowing the bolt to close.
Having it slam fire is not normal and should be nearly impossible with the spring loaded firing pin. If you still have it I would inspect the brass that ejected, it would tell you if it was the firing pin or some debris.

Do you still have the stock trigger?

I tried an armaspec in mine, I couldn't get it to charge and the bolt wouldn't go back at all. Let me know what yours does.

Thanks

You are very correct, the bolt will not even cycle with the Armaspec recoil spring. The bolt in the FX9 isn't the same as a standard BCG. I shall keep looking for a contained recoil spring. Not so much to make it softer shooting, there is little to no recoil with this rifle, more for the piece and quiet.

Had mine out yesterday and swapped the stock buffer & spring out for a Spike's T2 and spring that comes with that buffer. The gun cycled 100% using 124gr reloads with 4gr of titegroup and 115gr reloads with 4.2gr of titegroup. Ejection was to 2 o'clock about 8-9 feet.

Good to know. Where did you get your T2?

You could also save a bunch of money and buy a flatwire spring, I watched a video about springs and they're more consistent and much quieter.
I plan to replace the springs in all my ARish rifles with flatwire buffer springs after seeing it. Way cheaper than the captured JP system like my Modern Hunter has.

I actually don't really notice the spring noise in my AR's, I just liked the more consistent pressure throughout the bolt travel range. I only really want to change them just to play and see if I can hear or feel a difference.

Still haven't shot mine since the bolt mod even though I've carried it around a few times walking the dogs, just haven't stumbled across any more retarded coyotes since the one I got a few weeks ago with my 17HMR.

Thanks for checking, I was hoping it was just me. I wanted a different buffer setup for exactly the same reason as you not for recoil impulse but because of the noise lol.
