The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 OWNERS thread.

The bolt carriers are different lengths between generations (as are the corresponding barrel extensions). They can't be mixed and matched. The feed ramps are slightly different as well (pretty subtle), but you can install a gen 2 feed ramp in a gen 1 gun if you want. To my eyes the uppers appear to be identical between the two gens, and from experience gen 2 uppers work fine on gen 1 lowers.

Thanks for the info..good to know

Finally finished reading through this thread! So much valuable information in here, thanks to everyone that went out and tested their FX-9's to add to this collection of knowledge. I bought mine about 5 months ago but wasn't able to shoot too much due to work being super busy. Got more time now and plan on going to the range once or twice month.

Shot around 250 - 300 rounds through mine and am super happy with the ergonomics and accuracy of the FX-9, but I do experience the same issues as many others here with the LRBHO and the bolt slamming home on its own when handling the firearm.

To fix the LRBHO I want to pick up some new mags this week according to recommendations in this thread. I've seen people recommend the SGM mags: Do we think the .40 S&W variant will be as reliable as the 9mm version? Would love to benefit of the extended mag capacity that .40 S&W offers. Unfortunately MAGPUL is only available in 9mm.

KEy check out my thread on the LRBHO issues and resolves.

Take Care

Bob

Oh I didn't realize that you made a full thread about it beyond what you posted here. More reading it is! But good to hear that mags can be adapted to work with the FX-9.

Just did a bit more testing with my own mags. As with everyone else the 10 round OEM Glock mags don't lock back, the SGM 33/10 that was supplied with the gun does lock back. But looking at the mag it seems like there is some excessive wear. Any point of concern?

See here for image: https://imgur.com/a/4B6u1mn

If I recall correctly that mag had some issues with feeding though... next range day I gotta keep notes of which mags have what kind of issues.

Still new to the firearm world so please excuse my lack of mechanical understanding.

Much appreciated Bob. Have now had the time to read through the other thread and will consider a similar modification in the future. But for now I'll invest in some Korean mags and see if that's enough to fix the LRBHO on mine.

Thanks!

Been taking my FX-9 out a couple of times in recent weeks and I am growing ever more fond of her. Last weekend I experimented with ammo as my usual go-to CCI Blazer 115gr didn't make for a super accurate rifle. Tried some CCI 124gr which were quite inconsistent at 50m until I stepped up to flat nose CCI 147gr. Huge difference! Definitely a spicy round for 9mm standards and it throws brass far down the firing line, but the accuracy was way better than I expected. I'm confident a better shooter than me could get a 1-inch grouping @ 50 meters with this ammo.

Otherwise still waiting on new Magpul furniture that I've ordered from RDSC. Problem with going for an FDE / Black build is the wait time for backordered FDE parts.

Current mods:
- Magpul FDE hand stop
- Nickk's Charging Handle (love it!)
- Sig Romeo 5 Red dot
- Vortex Micro 3x Magnifier

Now I'm waiting on rail covers, a new grip with insert and my stock. Then it's onto the sling and lights!

Love this thing.

A favourite for me has been the Magtech 147 gr subsonic.

Noted, will try them, thanks! Tenda was out of CCI 147gr so they recommended Federal. Will see how they run and then pickup the Magtech for another range day!

does the FX-9 use a standard AR safety selector?

Yes it uses the standard selector. I have a hiperfire ambi at 60 degrees on mine. No issues i only had to trim a couple coils off the included selector spring. Hiperfire purposely uses longer springs that ate required to be trimmed.

I also had a norgon style ambi on it before i put in the hiperfire. No issues with the norgon style i just wanted a non 90 degree selector.

I recently purchased the FX-9 and have put ~700 rounds through it. I haven't had a single misfeed or stoppage in the time I've had it. I've only changed the charging handle with the one made by Nickk (which is awesome btw). That being said, I do perform a full detailed strip and clean/relube the entire gun after every session. The gun is always extremely filthy after every shoot no matter the round count. I've only ran 115gr FMJ PMC bronze branded ammo through it.

I've never had crumpled brass, however, I have read that the stock buffer is far too light for the system. I weighed the stock buffer and bolt together on a kitchen scale last night, and it was only 14.25oz. I'll try ordering a heavier buffer to get it closer to 22oz and reduce wear on the extractor and help with the "kick" when double tapping.

I am curious to hear if anyone has given their FX9 a somewhat steady diet of hollow points and see how it runs.

I have run Federal HSTs through mine and it has had the occasional feed issue.

I have heard Hornady Critical Duty/Defense does not run reliably through the FX9.

Not sure if anyone has run anything else hollow point - Hydra Shoks, PDX1, Gold Dot, Golden Saber, etc. and can share their experiences.

2. Magpul PMAGs - GL9/GL7 - both are a much cheaper (price wise) option and they have and continue to work fine. I have about 10-15 of these. I got another one that is a 27-rounder pinned to 10, which works great. Personally, I would use PMAGs for both their reliability and price point. They are overall lighter than the Glock mags. Also much easier to open up and clean/adjust than Glock.

Looking to buy some Magpul mags - Are yours 17's pinned to 10, or native 10 round mags?

Also I haven't shot any hp's through my FX-9 yet. But once I have figured out the mag situation I might give some of my SIG ammo a try and can report back.

My Magpuls are all pinned/riveted...either 17/10 or 27/10.

The only native 10 round Glock mags I have are OEM Glock and ProMag. All my Magpuls are higher capacity, pinned to confirm with Canadian capacity restrictions.

BTW, I recently picked up more 27/10s at G4C and had them price match Select Shooting Supplies' $39.99 per mag (G4C had them listed for $49.99 but they price matched and sold them to me for $39.99).
