Unless you can fire good shots from all positions in SR it doesn't matter what gun you are shooting.
As a matter of fact the 200m mound either makes or breaks you.The rest of it is basically prone shooting.

IMO

All of the newbs interested in SR don't wanna come out and look like a fool by doing the wrong things and not performing well due to nerves. For the average competitive guy it's embarrassing, and a real hit to the ego. This is what is keeping most guys and gals away.

There needs to be some introduction into the sport. Like others have mentioned, there needs to be some fundamentals taught, not just a course of fire walk through. The range only guys like me, shoot bench mostly. Sometimes if the range is dead then some prone and some standing and kneeling can be practiced.

My range for example, Has an enclosed roof and doesn't have any room to do any of this unless your in front of the firing line (and by yourself of course) It's tough for the average guy to teach himself.

Introduction and fundamental training courses IMO need to be worked into the yearly schedule.

I agree, and that's why we in the ORA offer clinic(s) in May or Late April for the coming season! It's also a safety thing that we have to observe! ;) I want to ensure that we have everyone on board for some challenging stages from the new CFSAC matches 1-4.

Cheers,
Barney

Does anyone do this in Alberta? My gut says no.

See my sig. line.
The CSRA runs nearly monthly matches typically on Sundays, and run clinics/range orientations/ walk-backs on Saturdays.
This year we will be trialling a new to us CQB style shoot for three matches, and if it is well received will continue a regular program.
On more than one occasion I have offered up loaner guns to guys that want to give it a try - all I ask is they supply factory ammo. First matches are free for newbies as well. Can't get a much more 'open door policy' than that.

We run a fairly easy going match with bragging rights as prizes.
We have regular shooters that shoot a number of different rifles - one a CZ858 with Czech. surplus and open sights.
