Back in the early 70's my Dad purchased his first big game rifle. A Remington "package gun" 700 ADL 7mm Remington Magnum complete with a factory stainless barrel. He picked it up at the hardware store for just less than $200 and it came packaged with weaver mounts and a Bushnell Sportview 4X scope. He eventually cratered the scope and a friend traded him a Leupold Vari X II 3-9X40 for some furnace work. A few years later it was my first bedding job and dad added a decelerator himself. That went on top in Millet rings and it continued to be his only big game rifle until just a few years ago.

Then a few years ago he started hunting with a Kimber 84M 7mm-08 and eventually the 7mm was given to a family member who promptly stuck it in a soft case with a trigger lock under a bed in the basement. My dad realized his error, got it back, but not before rust had got it in a spot or two. Luckily it was just surface rust and is a cosmetic reminder that some people should't own firearms.

Fast forward to a month ago and a successful Moose draw and Dad wanted to dust off the "Ole 7 mag". So I volunteered to work up a load for it (not that he couldn't). He picked up a box of 160 gr TSX's to try, I cleaned the barrel and eventually got out today to try the first load.

I guess it's one and done. Not bad for a 40 yr old "cheap" rifle.

Come on now Chuck...a little Saturday morning teasing of us rifle loonies??

This is some kind of joke, right?

Everyone knows that the 7 Mag is an inferior cartridge when compared to the 270 Win, the 30-06 and especially the almighty 280 Ackley

We all know that factory 700's won't shoot for beans compared to a Salvage or a Tikka.:stirthepot2:

We all know that ADL's are a "cheap" 700, so they can't possible shoot like the revered BDL...

...too many things wrong with this post....:D;)

all kidding aside,....that's a good shooting old 700 in one of my favourite chamberings.

I see it has the square safety knob,...those are nice,...nice purple tinge to the scope's AO and I'm thinking it probably has a tapered cross hair reticle.

Chuck that rifle has some major issues....

1) Its old, old guns are useless
2) Its a Model 700, they dont shoot.
3) Its a long mag, they are inferior.
4) 160 TSX's are flat base...and those cannot group.

So really Chuck...what'd ya shoot the bughole group with? A T3?

You forgot that it's a push feed. Pretty much a sure thing that the bearer is going to get munched by a bear when it fails to feed and/or extract.

I think that is a given and falls under Number. 2. :) Those old ADLs sure were a bargain. Nicer wood on that one than most of the new M700 CDL/BDLs.

Chuck, Nice shooting and good call by your pa getting that one back! It should kill a moose, or mouse at a 100 yards, with that load...:D

I have owned 3 or 4 of those older 700's with the stainless [coated black by some method] barrels.
One was a 264 Win Mag, the others 7mm Rem Mags.
These rifles all shot extremely well.
The ADL stock always felt better in my hands than did the BDL version.
Something about the "wrist" area that you grip with your trigger hand.
That one is well worth keeping...not only accurate, but has nostalgic charisma.
Regards, Eagleye.
