The grange gun club review? Help!!

Hello,

The week before last i went and paid my $700 :eek: for my membership at the grange. The things i liked about it was the hours and how close it was to my house. Does anyone have any experience with the Grange gun club? Are any of you members there? Any of you have any reviews? Any tips or pointers? Do i have to buy the ammo for the practical shooting for the practical part of the test or it is provided? What do you guys think, Did i make a wise decision?
 
$700? Did it go up? Wow!

I joined last year. I'm not renewing.

Around this time last year, it was ~$600 for new members. As if that wasn't enough, I was charged around $80 for ammo. Okay fine, I'll deal with it. This place is close to me so I'll suck it up and kept thinking, it'll 'only' be ~$500 for renewal. It is probably the most $$$ club in Ontario, maybe in Canada. I don't know. But I paid b/c it's 25 mins from me.

Other than that, this place does have nice facilities. You can enjoy looking at their goodies when you arrive or leave. However, the reason why I didn't renew is b/c of the ventilation. If I can get black snot within 30mins and develop a head ache within the same amount of time, something is wrong. If that doesn't bother you, enjoy your new club. :)
 
I got news letter. Looks like they're supposedly changing filters every 2 weeks now as opposed to once about every two months. Better but still not up to par, IMO.

Still won't renew even if i didn't find new club. Too $$$.
 
NO denying the high price, however... keep in mind what the price gives you

1) Indoor range with 20 lanes and fully automated target retrievel systems
2) Full service shop ( ammo, firearms and gunsmith on site )
3) Range guns you can use pending the RO's dont need them for noob famil shoots, I got a chance to shoot one of the RO's USP before buying one, which was an awesome gesture.
4) 5 minute drive from 404
5) They had CDP league shoots on wed nights but I dont think its going on anymore, defintely have ipsc on thursday nights though.
6) Open till 9pm most nights ( i think sundays is 7? )

And the demo's every few months are always sweet, I dont know of any other ranges in ontario that have frequent demo's like TS does.
 
My wife and I have been members there since the beginning of the year.

So far it's been great, a good group of people, we haven't encountered any range nazi's, good hours, pretty much all the good stuff stated in the post above.

You will need to buy the ammo for your probation shoots, so don't forget to bring your rpal. If they haven't changed the probation from when we did it, first night is .22lr and .38special, day 2 is 9mm and .40, and day 3 is .45 and your choice for your accuracy test.

Once you do that and you have a restricted registered to you they'll apply for your LTATT.
 
Yes, it's expensive. But there is no viable comparable alternative that I know of near Toronto, or anywhere in Ontario, that I know of.

Love the store. Love the people in the store, including that especially attractive girl who works there.

The club is excellent and efficient with the paperwork, both buying guns there, and with the ATTs, renewals, etc. I've never been hassled by anyone, for anything.

I never had issues with the ventilation system.

Sometimes it gets too crowded for my liking. I avoid going there on weekends after 11 or 12 or before 6 pm. The range officers are great, but too many new shooters all around me make me a bit uneasy.

I'd be happier if they reserved range B for the members and range A for guests when range B is not otherwise in use.

To me, it's worth it for sure.

I've been to Silverdale. It's awesome, but obviously a totally different kind of club. Even if I could get to Silverdale in less than an hour, I'd still join the Grange. And Silverdale.
 
Day pass for the range is $40 flat. I shoot once a month if I'm lucky. No way in hell I'm paying $700 for a membership..
I honestly love that place. The service is great, employees are friendly and knowledgeable. But the membership price is ridiculous.. However, I don't know if TSC sets the price. I think le grange does?

I love the way silverdale looks off their website. I'd love a longer range and outdoor so I can pick up an SKS or larger caliber rifle, but I can't justify driving more than TWO HOURS to shoot..
 
The Grange is a well organized club at a top notch facility close to Toronto. Both the club and the facility have been improving year after year and strive to become better, more organized and offer members events and training. Target Sports seems to have a lot of rando-noob types coming in to try shooting. It makes me a little uneasy, so I keep my Grange I.D. badge in my bag. It's good for the future of the sport, so I don't mind dealing with it. That being said, I can see a lot more people getting into the sport and joining the club - even at $700 per year. I could see membership waiting lists starting within 2 years and status as an "exclusive shooting club" within the next five if Target Sports doesn't expand it's facility either there or at another location. The Grange is on the up and up!
 
I'm a member at both the Grange and Sharon GC. They are both very expensive, but if you are north of TO or in the east end there is nothing else comparable close by. As a family man I like to be able to pop down to Target Sports after work for 100 rds of group therapy and make it back home in about an hour.

Little late to ask now, don't you think?

However, most of the members seem to be quite happy with The Grange club, and they are doing what they can to keep them happy.
One issue that seems somewhat bothersome is ventilation.

Can they fix it, is it technically possible within existing facility- I don't know.

I hope they can, since otherwise they seem to be good bunch of guys, and range is clean and up to date, with automated target retrieval as a big +++

There IS an alternative- Shooters Choice in Waterloo with hospital grade excellent ventilation system.
About an hour drive from Toronto.
 
I have been a member since July 1. Price aside, the place is a great facility...however, I do agree that the ventilation has not been great the 3 months I have been shooting there. I too find I can only last 1 hour in the range...after that...the headache sets in (and I never get headaches in general)...so it must be the ventilation. I too just read about the filter changing...so hope that improves the air circulation. Other than this issue I love everything about the place.
 
I was at Target yesterday, was just in the area, didn't do any shooting. Wow was it busy yesterday. Maybe only 3-4 members, but the rest were drop ins.

So they added a ton of regular fans along the back wall. I thought that was funny. I went in and smelt the usual gun powder. Doubt there was much action in the real ventilation system. The fans were doing all the work.

One range officer was wearing a real respirator mask. Good for him... 2 weeks filter change not going to cut it. They need to address the real problem (the vent system). They better change new filters by last night. Today is going to really suck for their S&W day.

I have been a member for 3 years, it's not bad however it is expensive.You can use the range guns but you have to pay and have a baby sitter with you (range officer) like you are a little child:mad: (you guys dont know how much I miss the shooting edge). They give you good service, but they are so full of crap, after they changed the old safety officer name SAL , they also changed some staff around for the worst. Prior to this you where allowed to shoot and then pick up your brass even if the brass went passed the red line, now you cant and if you go after the red line to pick up the brass, some R.O will say thats not allowe. Before you were able to shoot the range guns without paying now they said you can't, u have to pay and have a R.O with you. The excuse is because the ontario firearms officer said so. We used to have this little plastic's jars to drop the bad cartridges , but now they put these METAL AMMO CANS WITH BIG SCREW'S so you cant not open these things, so if you make a mistake and put a good bullet , to bad for you! In general they changed so many things for the "better" I am not going to renew my membership again. Another example is when they opened a IDPA league, they said CDP guys just have to come wednesday's and shoot to see if they liked it. When you show up the actual safety officer asks for some gold card:confused:, not saying before you have to call the USA pay $60 american wait for the card and then show wednesday to see if you like it. Good luck to any new member's but for so much money I expect something better:rolleyes: There is a big difference between western ranges and ranges in Ontario. I just don't think it is appropriate to be treated like a child in this range when you are paying so much money
 
I was never crazy about IPSC matches held indoors - the air quality deteriorates rapidly. Outdoor matches is one of the benefits of being a member of Sharon Gun Club....... that and the 200 & 300m range.
