The Great Martian War

Can't believe the crap 'History' puts out these days!!! This isn't only sci-fi (and belongs on the appropriate channel), but it's an insult to the actual History of our freedom! If it isn't Swamp People or Ice Road Truckers and now this, there is no HISTORY on that channel anymore!

There is about one week around Remembrance day that they have anything I like.....

I watch the Great Martian War it was really bad replayed the same vintage WW1 footage over and over, and story line was there but presented very weakly I think they ran out of money making this complete waste of time. I am sorry I even watched it.

I kinda liked the show. :)
Some good WWI footage. and interesting perspectives on the leaders and the desperation of the times.
It just replaced the evil humans with evil E.T.s who were themselves soldier slaves to an evil parasite.
Much easier for the masses to take when the humans were all wearing the white hats and the aliens the black hats. :)

I remember when TLC used to be The LEARNING channel, which quickly devolved to became The "Ladies" Channel. and is now un-watchable for me.

Ditched all my cable except military channel and Speed so I can watch MX and SX. I wonder if we can sue these channels for false advertising? I mean, there's no history on History, and you sure as hell don't learn anything watching TLC.

"...catering to the masses..." Not a great deal of historical programming being filmed. Lots and lots of re-runs though.
"...remember the name of it..." There was more than one.

I wrote the History Channel public relations office about their programming a while back. I said that they should change the name to "The mixed bag of stuff" channel. They lady was not amused and was sorry that I did not like their new "diverse " format that was made to appeal to a wider audience.

Believe it or not but this piece of crap is running again, right now as I type. I bet the History channel had to really restrain themselves from running this during the Nov "Week of Rememberance" .

I just looked at the synopsis for the show, is this a joke ? Why can't they play the show "For King and Country" where the author visits the battlefields of WW1 and explains what happened in a first person narrative.

I caught some of this tonight.

Stepping back and looking at it from another angle, I can see what a load of hooey that a great deal of historical documentary can be. They can take the most tenuous evidence or the smallest known facts and spin it into an hour long show provided there is enough CGI and drama to spin it out. I watched a bit of Roman history that was like that... Precious little real substance and a whole lot of storytelling.

Perhaps this was done because it was the big anniversary of the War of the Worlds radio broadcast recently. It was replayed on the local radio network a few months back.

The way I took is was another approach to "The War of the Worlds". You know that barely know piece of literature written by a nobody from England, H.G. Wells.

Ok a quick search brought up their list of shows. Most of it is drivel, but some of them are actually good. Problem is finding a pair of waders high enough to get through the BS. I agree with a previous post. I think they should get the Norm Christie shows back.

Oh and look at that. The movie tomorrow night is District 9. Chalked full of historical facts that one is. I guess they kind of make it up a little. The movies on the 14th is Schindler's list

I missed that series world at war. Grew up watching the reruns on the knowlage network. A couple of years ago my wife found me a copy of the whole series on DVD. I guess a&e owns it now and is selling it. I watch the wile series one a year just to never forget.

Rifleman.

How the History Channel can air a show about something that never happened as "history" has long mystified me. Now its all about driving on ice, flying over ice, restoring/picking/pawning stuff or a double helping of MASH each day, this Martian show is a new low.

Yep my thoughts exactly. Some of those shows aren't even that bad, I enjoy MASH myself, but they DO NOT belong on the History channel.

That's a bit how I felt when I saw the ads. If they want to make a random generic alien wars movie fine go ahead go do it on space channel but don't try to base it so closely off an actual war that just seems insulting to the memories of those who fought and died.

I watch the Great Martian War it was really bad replayed the same vintage WW1 footage over and over, and story line was there but presented very weakly I think they ran out of money making this complete waste of time. I am sorry I even watched it.

Well I am glad to hear that I didn't miss anything. I admit generally I am that open-minded type and would often say "well now before you make an opinion you should watch it" but this was such a new low for the History channel that I couldn't bring myself to watch it.

I wrote the History Channel public relations office about their programming a while back. I said that they should change the name to "The mixed bag of stuff" channel. They lady was not amused and was sorry that I did not like their new "diverse " format that was made to appeal to a wider audience.

Good on you! I wish they would read this thread (as well as the one I started over in the movie lounge) and maybe get the idea that by pandering to a wider audience of historical nincompoops they have completely ostracized what should be their target audience of true history enthusiasts.

I think it's a shame that as the 100th anniversary of WWI approaches this is all the "History" channel can come up with.

$10 says they actually have the audacity to rerun Great Martian Wars during the 100th anniversary of WWI when it is here.... How sick would that make everyone?

Perhaps this was done because it was the big anniversary of the War of the Worlds radio broadcast recently. It was replayed on the local radio network a few months back.

In that case maybe make a documentary on the War of the Worlds and the societal impact it had when it was first aired. That would at least be relevant to history in some tiny way unlike The Great Martian Wars.

I just looked at the synopsis for the show, is this a joke ? Why can't they play the show "For King and Country" where the author visits the battlefields of WW1 and explains what happened in a first person narrative.

Agreed! But it seems this won't be happening as our dear friend the History channel is no more. RIP History you died too young!

And the Bonnie & Clyde show coming up probably isn't anymore accurate.

I think it's going to pretty sensationalised, but based on the previews they hired a pretty knowledgeable armorer. My non-milsurp firearms passion is the gangster guns of the 20s and 30s, and the preview shows Frank Hamer with both a Remington Model 8 and Colt Monitor, and Bonnie with a sawed-odd Stevens 520, just like the one of theirs in the Texas Rangers Museum in Waco. So it'll be worth it just for the gun ####.
